prayed that, if it were pos'sible, the hour might pass' from him. 36 And he said, Ab'ba, Fa'ther, a'll things are' pos'sible un'to thee; take awa'y this cup from me: nevertheless' not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37 And he com'eth, and fi'ndeth them sle'eping, and saith un'to Pe'ter, Si'mon, sle'epest thou? could'est not thou watch' one hour? 38 Watch' ye, and pra'y, lest ye en'ter in'to tempta'tion: the spirit truly is read'y, but the flesh 'is' we'ak. 39 And again he went awa'y and prayed, and spake the same words: 40 And when he returned, he found them asle'ep again'; (for their eyes were heav'y;) ne'ither wist they what to an'swer him. 41 And he com'eth the third time, and saith un'to them, Sle'ep on now, and take your' rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betra'yed in'to the hands of sin'ners. 42 Ri'se up, let us go; lo, he that betra'yeth me is at hand.

43 And immediately, while he yet spake, com'eth Ju'das, one of the twelve, and with him a grea't mul'titude with swo'rds and sta'ves, from the chief prie'sts and the scri'bes, and the el'ders. 4 And he that betra'yed him had given them a to'ken, sa'ying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him' awa'y sa'fely. 45 And as so'on as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Mas'ter, mas'ter; and kissed him. 46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 47 And one of them that stood by drew a swo'rd, and smo'te a servant of the high priest, and cut off his e'ar. 48 And Je'sus an'swered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thie'f, with swo'rds and with sta'ves, to take me? 49 I was da'ily with you in the temple te'aching, and ye took' me not but the scrip'tures must be fulfill'ed. 50 And they a'll forsook' him and fled. 51 And there followed him a certain young man, hav'ing a lin'en cloth cast' about' 'his' naked 'body' and the young men laid hold ọn hịm : And he left the lin'en cloth, and fled from them na'ked.

53 And they led Je'sus awa'y to the high prie'st: and with him were assembled all the chief prie'sts, and the el'ders, and the scri'bes. 54 And Pe'ter followed him afa'r off, e'ven in'to the palace of the high prie'st: and he sat with the servants, and wa'rmed himself' at the fi're. 55 And the chief priests and all the coun'cil so'ught for wit'ness against' Je'sus to put him to death; and found nonę: 56 For man'y bare false wit'ness against him; but their wit'ness

agreed not togeth'er. 57 And there aro'se certain, and bare false wit'ness against' him, sa'ying, 58 We heard him say, I will destroy' this temple that is made with hands, and within' three da'ys I will build anoth'er made without' hands. 59 But neither so did their wit'ness agre'e togeth'er. 60 And the high priest stood' up in the midst, and ask'ed Je'ṣus, sa'ying, An'swerest thou nothing? what is it which' these witness against thee? 61 But he held his peace, and an'swered nothing. Again' the high prie'st ask'ed him, and said unto him, Art thou the Chri'st, the Son of the Bless'ed? 62 And Je'sus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 63 Then the high prie'st rent his clothes, and saith, What ne'ed we an'y farther wit'nesses? 64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condem'ned him to be guilty of death. 65 And some began' to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say un'to him, Prophesy and the servants did stri'ke him with the palms of their hands. 66 And as Pe'ter was bene'ath in the palace, there com'eth one of the ma'jds of the high prie'st: 67 And when she sa'w Pe'ter wa'rming himself', she look'ed upon' him, and said, And thou also wast with Je'sus of Nazareth. 68 But he denied, sa'ying, I know not, ne'ither understand' I what thou sa'yest. And he went out in'to the po'rch; and the cock crew. 69 And ma'id saw him again', and began' to say to them that stood' by, This is 'one' of them. 70 And he denied it again'. And a little af'ter, they that stood' by said again' to Pe'ter, Su'rely thou art 'one' of them; for thou art a Galile'an, and thy spe'ech agre'eth 'thereto'." 71 But he began' to curse and to swea'r, 'sa'ying,' I know not this man of whom ye spe'ak. 72 And the second time the cock crew. And Pe'ter called to mi'nd the word that Je'ṣus said unto him, Befo're the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon', he wept.

CHAP. XV. And straightway in the morning the chie'f priests held a consulta'tion with the el'ders and scri'bes, and the whole coun'cil, and bound Je'sus, and car'ried him' awa'y, and deliv'ered him' to Pi'late., 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? and he an'swering, said un'to him, Thou sa'yest it.' 3 And the chie'f prie'sts accu'sed him of man'y things; but he an'swered nothing. And Pi'late asked him again', sa'ying,

An'swerest thou noth'ing? beho'ld how man'y things they wit'ness against thee. 5 But Je'sus yet an'swered nothing: so that Pi'late maʼrvelled.

6 Now at 'that' fe'ast he rele'ased un'to them one pris'oner, whomsoever they desired. 7 And there was one' na'med Barab'bas, which lay' bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had commit'ted mur'der in the insurrection. 8 And the multitude, cry'ing aloud', began' to desi're him to do' as he had ev'er done un'to them. 9 Bụt Pi'late an'swered them, sa'ying, Will ye that I rele'ase un'to you the King of the Jews? 10 (For he knew that the chie'f priests had delivered him for en'vy.) But the chie'f prie'sts mo'ved the pe'ople, that he should rath'er rele'ase Barab'bas un'to them. 12 And Pi'late an'swered and said again' un'to them, What will ye then that I shall do 'un'to him' whom ye call the King of the Jews? 13 And they cri'ed out again', Cru'cify him. 14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why? what e'vil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him. 15 And 'so' Pilate, willing to content' the pe'ople, released Barab'bas unto them, and deliv'ered Je'sus, when he had scourged him,' to be crucified.

16 And the soldiers led him awa'y in'to the ha'll called Preto'rium; and they call togeth'er the whole band. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and plat'ted a crown of tho'rns, and put it about' his head,' 18 And began' to salu'te him, Ha'il, King of the Jews! 19 And they smo'tẹ him on the head with a re'ed, and did spit upon' him, and, bow'ing their' kne'es, wor'shipped him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to cru'cify him. 21 And they compel' one Si'mon a Cyre'nian, who pass'ed by, com'ing out of the coun'try, the father of Al'exander and Ru'fus, to bea'r his cross. 22 And they bring him un'to the place Golgotha, which is, be'ing interpreted, The place of a scull. 23 And they gave him to drink wi'ne min'ględ with myrrh: but he received 'it' not.

24 And when they had cru'cified him, they parted his garments, cas'ting lots upon' them, what ev'ery man should take. 25 And it was the third hour; and they cru'cified him. 26 And the superscrip'tion of his accusa'tion was writ'ten over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27 And with him they cru'cify two thie'ves; the one on his right

hand, and the oth'er on his left. 28 And the scrip'ture was fulfill'ed, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgres'sors. 29 And they that pass'ed by ra'iled on him, wagging their heads, and sa'ying, Ah, thou that destroy'est the temple, and buil'dest 'it' in three days, 30 Save thyself', and come down from the cross. 31 Li'kewise also the chief prie'sts, moc'king, said among themselves, with the scribes, He saved oth'ers; himself' he can'not save. 32 Let Chri'st the King of Israel descend' now from the cross, that we may see and belje've. And they that were cru'cified with him revi'led him.

33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness o'ver the whole land until the ni'nth hour. 34 And at the ni'nth hour Je'sus cri'ed with a loud voice, sa'ying, Elo'i, Elo'i, la'ma sabac'hthani? which is, be'ing inter'preted, My Go'd, my Go'd, why hast thou forsaken me? 35 And some of them that stood' by, when they heard it,' said, Beho'ld he calleth Eli'as. 36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vin'egar, and put 'it' on a re'ed, and gave him to drink, sa'ying, Let alo'ne; let us see whether Eli'as will come to take him down. 37 And Je'sus cri'ed with a loud voice, and gave up the gho'st. 38 And the va'il of the temple was rent in twa'in from the top to the bot'tom.

39 And when the centu'rion, which stood' o'ver against' him, saw that he so cri'ed out, and gave up the gho'st, he said, Truly this man was' the Son of Go'd. 40 There were a'lso wom'en look'ing on afa'r off: amon'g whom was Ma'ry Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Ja'mes the less and of Jo'ses, and Salo'me; 41 (Who also, when he was in Gal'ilee, followed him, and min'istered un'to him;) and man'ý oth'er wom'en which came up with him un'to Jeru'salem.

42 And now, when the e'ven was come, (because it was the prepara'tion, that is, the day befo're the sab'bath,) 43 Jo'seph of Arimathe'a, an hon'ourable coun'sellor, which also waited for the kingdom of Go'd, came, and went in bo'ldly un'to Pi'late, and craved the bod'y of Je'sus. 44 And Pi'late marvelled if he were already dead and, calling 'un'to him' the centurion, he ask'ed him whether he had been an'y while dead. 45 And when he knew 'it' of the centurion, he gave the bod'y to Jo'seph. 46 And he bo'ught fine linen, and took' him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and la'id him in a sep'ulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone un'to the do'or of the

sep'ulchre. 47 And Ma'ry Mag'dalene, and Ma'rý 'the moth'er' of Jo'ses, beheld' where he was la'id.

CHAP. XVI.And when the sab'bath was past, Ma'rý Magdalene, and Ma'ry 'the moth'er' of Ja'mes, and Salo'me, had bought sweet spi'ces, that they might come and anoint' him. 2 And very early in the mo'rning the first 'day' of the week, they came un'to the sep'ulchre at the ri'sing of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, Who shall ro'll us awa'y the stone from the do'or of the sep'ulchre ? 4 (And when they look'ed, they saw that the stone was rolled away) for it was ver'y grea't. 5 And, en'tering in'to the sep'ulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white ga'rment; and they were affright'ed. 6 And he saith un'to them, Be not affright'ed. Ye se'ek Je'sus of Nazareth, which was cru'cified he is ris'en; he is not he're: behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go your way, tell his disci'ples and Pe'ter that he go'eth befo're you in'to Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said un'to you. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sep'ulchre; for they trem'bled and were amazed: neither said they an'y thing to an'y 'man; for they were afra'id.

9 Now, when 'Je'sus' was ris'en early the first 'day' of the week, he appeared first to Ma'ry Mag'dalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and to'ld them that had been with him, as they mo'urned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was ali've, and had been seen of her, believed not.

12 Af'ter that he appeared in anoth'er fo'rm un'to two of them, as they walked, and went in'to the coun'try. 13 And they went and told it' un'to the residue: ne'ither belie'ved they them.

14 Af'terward he appeared un'to the eleven as they sat at me'at, and upbra'ided them with their unbelie'f and ha'rdness of heart, because they belie'ved not them which had se'en him after he was ris'en. 15 And he said un'to them, Go ye in'to all the world, and pre'ach the gos'pel to every cre'ature. 16 He that belie'veth, and is bapti'zed, shall be saved; but he that belie'veth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that belje've; In my name shall they cast' out dev'ils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink an'y deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recov'er.
