in Chri'st. 17 Fo'r 'it is' bet'ter, if the will of Go'd be so', that ye suf'fer for well-doing, than for e'vil-doing. 18 For Chri'st also hath once suf'fered for sin's, the just for the un'just, that he might bring us to Go'd, be'ing put to death' in the flesh', but quick'ened by the Spir ́it: 19 By which also he went and pre'ached un'to the spirits in pris'on; 20 Which som'etime were disobe'dient, when once the long-suffering of Go'd waited in the days of Noe, while the a'rk was a prepa'ring, wherein' few', that is, e'ight so'uls, were saved by wa'ter. The like figure whereunto' 'e'ven' bap'tism doth also now sa've us, (not the put'ting awa'y of the filth of the flesh', but the an'swer of a good' con'science to'ward Go'd,) by the resurrec ́tion of Je'sus Chri'st: 22 Who is gone in'to heav'en, and is on the right hand of Go'd; a'ngels, and authorities, and pow'ers, be'ing made sub'ject un'to him.

CHAP. IV.—1 Forasmuch then as Chri'st hath suffered for us in the flesh', a'rm yourselves li'kewise with the sa’mẹ mi'nd for he' that hath suf'fered in the flesh' hath ce'ased from sin'; 2 That he no longer should live the rest of 'his' time in the flesh to the lust's of men', but to the will' of Go'd. 3 For the time past' of our' life may suffi'ce us to have wro'ught the will' of the Gen'tiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lust's, excess' of wi'ne, rev'ellings, ban'quetings, and abom'inable idol'atries: 4 Wherein' they think it stra'nge that ye' run not with' them' to the sa'me excess of ri'ot, spe'aking e'vil of you;' Whọ shall give account' to him' that is read'y to judg'e the quick' and the dead'. 6 Fo'r, for this ca'use was the gos'pel pre'ached also to them that are dead', that they might be judged according to men' in the flesh', but live acco'rding to Go'd in the Spirit. 7 But the end' of all things is at hand' be ye ther'efore so'ber, and watch' un'to prayer. 8 And, above all things, have fer'vent charity amon'g yourselves fo'r charity shall cover the multitude of sin's. 9 U'se hospital'ity one to anoth'er without' grudging. 10 As every man hath received the gift', 'e'ven so" min'ister the same on'e to another, as good' stew'ards of the man'ifold gra'ce of Go'd. 11 If an'y man spe'ak, let him spe'ak' as the or'acles of Go'd; if an'y man min'ister, ‘let him do' it' as of the ability which Go'd giv'eth; that Go'd in all things may be glo'rified through Je'sus Chri'st: to whom be praise and domin'ion for ev'er and ev'er. 12 Beloved, think it not stra'nge concer'ning the fi'ery tri'al which is to try' you, as though some stra'nge thing hap'pened un'to you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are parta'kers of Chri'st's sufferings; that, when his glo'ry shall be revealed, ye' may be glad also with exce'eding joy'. 14 If ye be repro'ached for the na'me of Chri'st, hap'py "are ye;' for the Spirit of glo'ry and of Go'd res'teth upon' you: on their part he is e'vil spo'ken of, but on yo'ur part he is glorified. 15 But let non'e of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an e'vil-do'er, or 'as' a

bus'ybody in oth'er men's mat'ters. 16 Yet if 'an'y man

suf'fer' as a Chris'tian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify Go'd on this behalf. 17 For the time is com'e' that judg'ment must begin' at the house of Go'd: and if it' first 'begin' at us', what' shall the end' 'be' of them' that obe'y not the gospel of Go'd? 18 And if the right'eous scarcely be saved, whe're shall the ungodly and the sin'ner appe'ar? 19 Wherefore, let them' that suffer acco'rding to the will' of Go'd commit' the ke'eping of their so'uls to him' in well-doing, as un'to a faithful Crea'tor. CHAP. V. The el'ders which are among you I' exho'rt, who am also an el'der, and a wit'ness of the suf'ferings of Chri'st, and also a parta'ker of the glo'ry that shall be reve'aled: 2 Fe'ed the flock of Go'd which is among you, ta'king the o'versight thereof', not by constra'int, but willingly; not for filthy lu'cre, but of a read'y mi'nd; 3 Ne'ither as be'ing lo'rds o'ver 'Go'd's' her'itage, but being ensam'ples to the flock: And when the chief Shepherd shall appe'ar, ye' shall receive a crown of glo'ry that fa'deth not awa'y. 5 Li'kewise, ye youn'ger, submit' yourselves un'to the el'der: yea', a'll of you' be sub'ject one to anoth'er, and be clo'thed with humility; fo'r Go'd resis'teth the proud', and giv'eth gra'ce to the hum'ble. 6 Hum'ble yoursel'ves therefore un'der the might'y hand of Go'd, that he may exa'lt you in due ti'me: 7 Cas'ting a'll your ca're upon' him'; fo'r he' ca'reth for you. Be so'ber, be vig'ilant; beca'use your ad'versary the dev'il, as a ro'aring lion, wa'lketh about', se'eking whom he may devour': 9 Whom resist' sted'fast in the fa'ith, kno'wing that the sa'me afflictions are accom'plished in your breth'ren that are in the world'. 10 But the Go'd of a'll gra'ce, who hath called us un'to his eternal glo'ry by Chri'st Jesus, af'ter that ye have suf'fered a while, ma'ke you perfect, stab'lish,

strengthen, set'tle 'you:' 11 To him' 'be' glo'ry and domin'ion for ev'er and ever. A'men'. 12 By Silva'nus, a faithful broth'er un'to you, (as I suppo'se,) I have writ'ten brie'fly, exhorting, and tes'tifying that this is the true grace of Go'd wherein' ye stand'. 13 The church' that is' at Bab'ylon, elec'ted togeth'er with 'yo'u,' salu'teth you; and so doth' Ma'rcus my son'. 14 Gre'et ye one anoth ́er with a kiss of charity. Peace 'be' with you all that are in Chri'st Je'sus. A'men'.

THE SECOND EPISTLE GENERAL OF

PETER.

CHAPTER I.

1 SIMON PETER, a servant and an apostle of Je'sus Chri'st, to them that have obtained like prec'ious fa'ith with us', through the right'eousness of Go'd and our Saviour Je'sus Chri'st: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied un'to you through the knowledge of Go'd, and of Je'sus our Lord, 3 Acco'rding as his divi'ne power hath given un'to us a'll things that 'perta'in' un'to li'fe and god'liness, through the knowledge of him' that hath called us to glo'ry and virtue: Whereby' are giv'en un'to us exce'eding grea't and precious prom'ises; that by the'se ye might be partakers of the divi'ne na'ture, hav'ing esca'ped the corruption that is in the world' through lust'. 5 And besi'des this, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; 6 And to knowledge, tem'perance; and to tem'perance, pa'tience; and to pa'tience, god'liness; 7 And to god'liness, broth'erly kindness; and to broth'erly kindness, charity. For if the'se things be in' you and abound', they make you that ye shall' neither 'be' barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Chri'st. 9 But he that lack'eth these things is blind, and can'not se'e afa'r of'f, and hath forgot'ten that he was purged from his o'ld sins. 10 Wherefore the rath'er, breth'ren, give dil'igence to make your calling and elec'tion su're; fo'r if ye do' these things ye shall never

fa'll: Fo'r so' an entrance shall be min'istered un'to you abun'dantly in'to the everlas'ting kin'gdom of our Lo'rd and Sa'viour Je'sus Chri'st. 12 Wherefore I will not be neg'ligent to put' you always in remem'brance of the'se things, though ye know them,' and be established in the present truth. 13 Yea', I think it me'et, as long as I am in this tab'ernacle, to stir' you up', by put'ting 'you' in remem'brance; 14 Knowing that sho'rtly I must put of'f 'this' my tabernacle, e'ven as our Lo'rd Jesus Chri'st hath she'wed me. 15 Moreover, I will endeavour that ye may be able after my dece'ase to have the'se things always in remem'brance. 16 Fo'r we have not followed cun'ninglydevi'ṣed fa'bles, when we made kno'wn un'to you the power and com'ing of our Lo'rd Jesus Chri'st, but were ey'e-wit'nesses of his majesty. 17 Fo'r he received from Go'd the Father honour and glo'ry, when there ca'me such a voice to him from the ex'cellent glo'ry, This' is my beloved Son', in whom I am well-ple'ased. 18 And this voi'ce which ca'me from heav'en we heard', when we were with him in the holy mount'. 19 We have also a more su're word of prophecy; whereunto' ye do well' that ye take he'ed, as un'to a light' that shi'neth in a da'rk place, until' the day da'wn, and the da'y-star ari'se in your hea'rts: 20 Kno'wing this first', that no' proph'ecy of the scrip'ture is of an'y private interpreta'tion. 21 Fo'r the proph'ecy ca'mẹ not in o'ld time by the will' of man'; but ho'ly men of Go'd spa'ke as they were' mo'ved by the Holy Gho'st.

CHAP. II. But there were false proph'ets also amon'g the people, e'ven as there shall be false te'achers amon'g you, who privily shall bring in dam'nable her'esies, e'ven deny'ing the Lo'rd that bought them, and bring upon' themselves swift destruc'tion. 2 And man'y shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of tru'th shall be e'vil spo'ken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with fe'igned words make mer'chandize of you: whose judg'ment now of a long time lin'gereth not, and their damna'tion slum'bereth not. 4 Fo'r if Go'd spa'red not the angels that sin'ned, but cast' them' down to hell', and delivered them' in'to cha'ins of darkness, to be reserv'ed un'to judg'ment; 5 And spared not the o'ld world, but saved No'e, the e'ightth 'per'son,' a pre'acher of right'eousness, brin'ging in' the flood' upon' the world of the ungodly; And turning the cit'ics of Sodom and

:

Gomor'rha in'to ash'es, condem'ned 'them' with an o'verthrow, ma'king them' an ensam'ple un'to tho'se that after should live ungodly; 7 And deliv'ered just Lot', vex'ed with the filthy conversation of the wick'ed: 8 (For that right'eous man dwelling amon'g them, in se'cing and he'aring, vex'ed 'his' right'eous so'ul from da'y to da'y with their' unlawful de'eds :) 9 The Lo'rd kno'weth how to deliv'er the god'ly out of temptations, and to reserv'e the unjust' un'to the day of judgment to be pun'ished; 10 But chie'fly them that walk after the flesh' in the lust of uncle'anness, and despi'se gov'ernment. Presum'ptuous are they,' self-will'ed, they are not afra'id to spe'ak e'vil of dig'nities. Whereas' angels, which are grea'ter in pow'er and might, brin'g not ra'iling accusation against' them befo're the Lord. 12 But these, as natural brute be'asts, ma'de to be taken and destroy'ed, spe'ak e'vil of the things that they understand' not, and shall ut'terly per'ish in their o'wn corruption; 3 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as' they that count it pleas'ure to ri'ot in the da'y-time. Spot's they are' and blem'ishes, spo'rting themselves with their own dece'ivings, while they feast with you: 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that can'not ce'ase from sin'; beguiling unstable so'uls: an hea'rt they have exercised with covetous prac'tices; cur'sed children: 15 Which have forsa'ken the right' way, and are gone astra'y, following the way of Ba'laam 'the son' of Bo'sor, who loved the wa'ges of unrighteousness; 16 But was rebu'ked for his iniq'uity: the dumb ass' spe'aking with man''s voice, forbade the madness of the proph'et. 17 These are well's without' wa'ter, cloud's that are car'ried with a tem'pest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak grea't swell'ing words' of van'ity, they allu're through the lust's of the flesh', 'through much' wan'tonness, tho'se that were cle'an esca'ped from them' who live in error. 19 While they prom'ise them lib'erty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: fo'r of whom a man is overcom'e, of the sa'me is he brought in bon'dage. 20 Fo'r if af'ter they have esca'ped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lo'rd and Sa'viour Je'sus Chri'st, they are again' entan'gled ther'ein', and overcom'e, the latter end' is worse with them than the begin'ning. 21 Fo'r it had been bet'ter for them not' to have known the
