KING. I WOULD I had that corporal soundness now,
As when thy father and myself in friendship
First tried our soldiership! He did look far
Into the service of the time, and was

Discipled of the bravest: he lasted long;
But on us both did haggish age steal on,
And wore us out of act. It much repairs me
To talk of your good father. In his youth
He had the wit, which I can well observe
This day in our young lords; but they may jest

Till their own scorn return to them unnoted,
Ere they can hide their levity in honour.
So like a courtier, contempt nor bitterness
Were in his pride or sharpness; if they were,
His equal had awaked them; and his honour,

ΑΝΑΞ. εἰ νῦν ἔχοιμι τὴν πρὶν ἄῤῥηκτον βίαν, οἷός γε τῷ σῷ ξυμπαραστατῶν πατρὶ φίλος φιλίστῳ πρῶτ ̓ ἐπειρώμην μάχης κεῖνος γὰρ ἦν παίδευμα τῶν ἀριστέων, πρόσω δ ̓ ἑώρα τοῦ ἐν δέοντι δρασίμου· κἀντεῖχε δαρόν· ἀλλὰ νῶν γήρως στύγος ἀμφοῖν προσεῖρπε καὶ τὸ δρᾶν ὑφείλετο. ἢ κάρτ ̓ ἀνηβῶ πατέρα σὸν μυθούμενος ὁ γὰρ τὰ κομψὰ κἀκ νέου τρίβων τις ἦν, ἃ τούσδ ̓ ὁρῶμεν τοὺς νεωτέρους πρόμους καὶ νῦν τρέφοντας· τοῖς δὲ χλευάζειν πάρα ἔστ ̓ ἂν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὕβρις ἠτιμωμένη πέσῃ παλίῤῥους, πρίν γ' ἀριστείαν χεροῖν σκῆψιν προτείνειν τῆς ὑπερκόμπου χλιδής. οὕτω δ ̓ ἔδειξεν εὐπροσήγορον φύσιν ὥστ ̓ ἐν φρονήσει καὶ λόγοις ὀξυστόμοις φῆναι τὸ γαῦρον μήτ' ἄγαν τὸ δύσκολον·

Clock to itself, knew the true minute when

Thus his good melancholy oft began;

On the catastrophe and heel of pastime

When it was out,-"let me not live," quoth he,

ἤγειρε γοῦν τάδ ̓ οὐξ ἴσου τιμώμενος,
εἴ που φανείη, χἡ φρενῶν γενναιότης,
στοιχεῖον ὡς, ἔφραζε τὴν ὥραν λόγων
ἀκμῆς παρούσης ἐξελευθεροστομεῖν·
ἡ γλῶσσα δ ̓ ἤδη ξυνέτρεχεν τῷ γνώμονι.
τοὺς ἥσσονας δὲ μοῖραν εἰς ἄλλην τιθεὶς
οὕτως ἐχρᾶτο, τοὔξοχον νεύων κάρα
τάξει ταπεινῇ, τούσδ' ἁβρύνεσθαι πιθὼν
ὁθούνεκ ̓ ἔτλη σεμνὸν ὧδ ̓ ὑφιέναι

φαύλοις ἐπαίνοις θυμόν· ἢ τοιόσδ ̓ ἀνὴρ δεῖγμ ̓ ἂν παράσχοι τοῖσδε τοῖς νεωτέροις, ᾧ κάρτα συντρέχοντες εὑρίσκοιεν αν τοὺς νῦν πάλιν βεβῶτας οὐ πρόσω βροτούς. κεῖται τὸ πατρὸς μνῆμα σῶν εἴσω φρενῶν κάλλιον, ὦναξ, ἢ ἐπὶ τῆς κατασκαφῆς· οὐ γάρ νιν οὕτως οἱ ἐπιτύμβιοι λόγοι αἰνοῦσ ̓ ὅσονπερ φθέγμα σοῦ τυραννικόν. ΑΝΑΞ. εἰ γὰρ ξυνείην τῷδε καν τάφοις ὅμως· ὁ δ ̓ ἔλεγεν ἀεί, κἄτι δὴ κλύειν δοκῶ, οὐ γὰρ κατ ̓ ὦτ ̓ ἔσειεν εὐπειθῆ λόγον, ἔσπειρε δ ̓ ἀκμάσοντα καὶ φύσοντ ̓ ἐκεῖ·

“ μὴ δῆτ ̓ ἔτ ̓ εἴην...” τοῦδε πόλλ ̓ οἰκτίσματος
πεπαυμένων πρὸς τέρμα καὶ καταστροφὴν
κώμων ὁ χρηστὸς ἦρχε· “ μὴ ζῴην ἔτι,
ἢν ὡς ἐλαίου λύχνος ἐλλείπων χρόνῳ
μύκης γένωμαι ταῖς νεωτέραις φρεσίν,
ῶν ὀξύφρων αἴσθησις οὐδαμοῦ λέγει
ἅπανθ ̓ ἃ μὴ νεοχμά, καὶ γνώμης ἀκμὴ
