Born in poor circumstances in 1830, Frederick Lee Bridell received no formal art training, yet at just 18 his talent was recognised by a travelling picture restorer, to whom Frederick then became apprenticed. He travelled to Germany, and when released from his employer he established his own studio in Southampton. Then on visiting Italy, he met and married Eliza Fox, a painter and daughter of William Johnson Fox MP. Yet his passionate love of nature had caused him to paint with no concern for his own health, and on the point of receiving the recognition he undoubtedly deserved, he died from consumption, aged just 32. It was said at the time that he would have been one of England's greatest artists had he lived longer. This book aims to awaken an interest in the work of this artist and accord recognition for the achievement of his short life. The record of what is known about the artist is set in the context of the times, and includes references to people and events which occurred during this very interesting period in British art history.
