2 His sovereign power without our aid
Made us of clay, and formed us men;
And when, like wandering sheep we strayed,
He brought us to his fold again.

3 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heavens our voices raise:
And earth with her ten thousand tongues
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.

4 Wide as the world is thy command;
Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

29.

Ps. ciii. (Hamilton.)

1 The Lord our God is merciful,

His love is infinite :

He saw us on the brink of hell,
And drew us from the pit.

He spared us when our hearts were held
In folly's fruitless ways;
He taught us thro' his Spirit's might,
To sing a Saviour's praise.

2 The Lord our God is merciful,
Our life to Him is dear,

Oft has He raised our drooping souls,
And chased our needless fear.

3 Extend to me that favour, Lord,
Thou to thy chosen dost afford;
When Thou return'st to set them free
Let thy salvation visit me.

31. Ps. cxvi. Part 1. ( Balbec.)

1 I love the Saviour of my soul,

My praise to Him shall never cease,
Because He heard my trembling call,
And filled my troubled breast with peace.

2 The pangs of death my soul oppressed : Hell threatened me with all its woes; In vain, I longed, I sought for rest, Still the dark tempest round me rose.

3 Then called I on the name of God, To heaven I breathed my fervent prayer, "O save me Lord, for thou art good, Release my spirit from despair."

4 I love the Saviour of my life,
Because his ear He opened wide,
Gently subdued my inward strife,
And bid me in his truth confide.

2 Eternal are thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends thy word;

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

34.

Ps. cxix. (Bennet's.)

1 The spirit breathes upon the word
And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page
Majestic like the sun;

It gives a light to every age,
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it, still supplies
The gracious light and heat:
His truths upon the nations rise,
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be thine
For such a bright display,
As makes a world of darkness rise,
With beams of heavenly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

32. Ps. cxvi. 2nd part. (Windle.)

1 I love my Saviour, for He pleads
That God may still my life prolong;
Mercy triumphant crowns his deeds,
That mercy now shall be my song.

2 Return my soul unto thy rest,

The Lord hath dealt in love with thee;
Thy life is spared, thy spirit blessed,
O praise thy God eternally.

3 What shall I render to the Lord,
For all his gifts of love and grace
I'll drink salvation from his word,
And give the sacrifice of praise.

4 I'll tell his mercies in his house,
Where grateful saints his love proclaim,
There will I pay my constant vows,
And spread the glories of his name.

33.

Ps. cxvii. (Job.)

1 From all that dwell below the skies,
Let the Creator's praise arise:
Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through every land, by every tongue.
