"From the date the institution was opened, or from the first of November 1853 to 31st of March Schooling Fees. 1854, Co.'s Rs. 377-8 have been realized; the pupils pay one rupee and eight annas per mensem; the fee is fixed by the Committee with reference to the position in society and means of the parents or guardians of the boys. "The late Second Master, Babu Omachurn Banerjea, resigned his situation, having been appointed TranslaChanges. tor to the Dacca Civil Court; Babu Junmo Joy Doss was appointed by the Council of Education to succeed him. An additional Fourth Master, Babu Bhugwan Chunder Sein, whose salary is defrayed from the Schooling

Fees, was appointed by the Local Committee under sanction of the Council.

The School is in its infancy, and at present the Committee have nothing particular to suggest respectSuggestions. ing the course of studies or the internal economy of the institution; they however wish to draw the earnest attention of the Council to the want of a good substantial School-house. A list which accompanies this Report, will show that the residents and Zemindars have contributed handsomely towards a fund for building a good School-house, but the amount contributed is not sufficient for the purpose. The number of pupils at present on the Register is 167, not including 37 supernumeraries; and the Committee have been obliged, owing to the want of accommodation in the present over-crowded School-house, to refuse a large number of applicants for admission into the School. The Secretary has been in communication with the Secretaries of the Local Committees of the neighbouring Zillahs, and it appears that the Mymensing School numbers more pupils than any other institution of a similar description in the neighbourhood. The following memorandum will show this:

"From a letter received from the Secretary to the Sylhet Local Committee, it would appear that the Government sanctioned Rs. 2,814-5-4 for the repairs of the School-house at that station, and that sum not being sufficient, a further amount of Co.'s Rs. 1,178 has been recommended by the Council for the sanction of the Government. Under these

circumstances the Local Committee express a hope that the Council will see fit to recommend to the Government to assist their efforts in raising a fund for the erection of a commodious and substantial School-house at this station. The Committee confidently expect, that, with increased accommodation at their disposal, the number of admissions to the institution will increase in proportion, for the people of the district seem to be fully alive to the great benefits which the institution holds out.

Donations.

"A separate list is submitted.

"The Committee observed, that as the School only opened in November last, the pupils are not Examinations. in their opinion sufficiently advanced in their studies to give hope of any favourable results from a general examination, at the same time the Committee are prepared to hold a general examination should the Council so wish it.

Library. "The library is in good order.

"The School is at present held in a thatched Bungalow which was occupied by the late private School buildings. School at this station, and which building has been placed at the disposal of the Local Committee by the subscribers to the late private School. The house is in good repair, but it is quite inadequate in size for the accommodation of the large number of pupils attending the School. The noise made by 167 boys congregated in one room, humming their lessons, is most distracting, and all attempts to keep order are vain. The Committee, in the absence of a Committee Room under the same roof as the School, are obliged to meet at the Judge's private dwelling.

"The Committee are of opinion that Rs. 5,000 would build a substantial and commodious brick-building. Of this sum Rs. 2,090 may be expected from local subscriptions and donations, and for the balance the Committee crave the liberal assistance of the Government."
