PREFACE.

A DEEP sense of the need of a periodical that should, in a suitable manner, supply the wants and uphold the interests of young men, led to the issue of the present work. It would be unseemly for its Conductors to pass any opinion on its merits; but the reception it has experienced, enables them to conclude that, at least, their motives, in thus attempting to supply the deficiency, have been kindly appreciated. The principle with which they started-that encouragement was desired only so long as the articles inserted were worthy of support—they have been and are still content to abide by; and it is to them a source of satisfaction to believe that their present readers have subscribed to their work from pure interest in its contents. While it has been their aim to compile their magazine in consistency with its title, and the objects they have had in view; and, while they have gladly availed themselves of every suggested improvement within their reach, still their experience, in preparing the first volume, has led them to see that a far wider scope exists for its operations than they had previously any conception of; at the same time, its circulation has not been sufficiently large to justify the adoption of any further responsibility, so that they have been compelled to await the course of events for the full development of the plans before them.

It will be judged, then, with what pleasure they announce, that favourable circumstances have arisen, by which they will be enabled to carry into effect their most extended wishes.
