FOREWORD

All wars that bring great changes have in their train many open blessings-and among these must be frankly counted the current revival of the general interest in sealiterature both in this country and in England. Over there they have even gone so far as to take up our own forgotten Herman Melville, whom we have also partly revived, and following up the gradual presentation of his best known works a complete edition of his writings is announced. In this particular instance the mother country has gone ahead of us, with an example which we can well afford to imitate. To our own credit is the greater number of single volumes that have appeared since the close of the Great War, the fact that the sea-story has found an eager welcome from our periodical press in general, and that, finally, we have a fully-equipped monthly magazine, the first one in the history of literature devoted entirely to the sea.

It is such conditions that induce me to present a second collection of "Great Sea Stories" to the reader.

JOSEPH LEWIS FRENCH.
