A Monastic Ode.--Specimen of American Morals.



Wilt thou, a gallant vet'ran, yield, [Written at a sequestered seat under some oaks, And, still unconquer'd, quit the field ?

Enamour'd of monastic ease, in a natural wilderness, about the beginning of the late war.]

Say, dost thou pant for shades like these ? ,

Is it a time to seek repose,
Solitudo, quam dilecta!

When all around insulting foes,
Hinc in cælum via recta

A furious, rash, impetuous throng,
Procul est insanitaris,

Eager for combat, rush along,
Et theatrum vanitatis.

Their banners raise, with hideous cry,
Plebs si sævit, hic sedebo.

And truth, and God himself, defy?
Et quæ supra sunt videbo.

Not through the silence of the groves,
Mecum angeli cantabunt,

Which pensive meditation loves;
Cæli Dominum laudabunt.

But through fierce conflicts and alarms,
O si semper sic sederem,

The din of war, the clang of arms,
Mundi turbas nec viderem !

And all the terrors of the fight,
Me dum tollent angelorum

The Christian seeks the realms of light.
