4 Thy favour, all my journey through,
Thou art engaged to grant:
What else I want, or think I do,
"Tis better still to want.

5 Wisdom and mercy guide my way;
Shall I resist them both?

A poor, blind creature of a day,
And crushed before the moth.

6 But ah! my inward spirit cries,
Still bind me to Thy sway;

Else the next cloud that veils my skies,
Drives all these thoughts away.

"Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit
of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."
Gal. iv. 6. C. M.

1 AND can my heart aspire so high,
Το say, "My Father, God!"
Lord! at Thy feet I fain would lie,
And learn to kiss the rod.

2 I would submit to all Thy will,
For Thou art good and wise.
Let every anxious thought be still,
Nor one faint murmur rise.

3 Thy love can cheer the darksome gloom,
And bid me wait serene,
Till hopes and joys immortal bloom,
And brighten all the scene.

4 "My Father!"-Oh, permit my heart
To plead her humble claim,

And ask the bliss those words impart
In my Redeemer's name.

597."

." I said, Thou art my God." Psalm xxxi. 14. c.

1 MY God! my Father! blissful name!
Oh may I call Thee mine?
May I with sweet assurance claim
A portion so divine?

2 This only can my fears control,
And bid my sorrows fly.
What harm can ever reach my soul
Beneath my Father's eye?

3 Whate'er Thy providence denies,
I calmly would resign;

For Thou art good, and just, and wise.
Oh, bend my
will to Thine.

4 Whate'er Thy sacred will ordains,
Oh, give me strength to bear;
And let me know my Father reigns,
And trust His tender care.

5 If pain and sickness rend this frame, And life almost depart,

Is not Thy mercy still the same,
To cheer my drooping heart?

6 Thy sovereign ways are all unknown
To my weak, erring sight:
Yet, let my soul, adoring, own
That all Thy ways are right.

7 My God! my Father! be Thy name My solace and my stay.

Oh, wilt Thou seal my humble claim,
And drive my fears away?

598. “Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant.

2 Sam. xxiii. 5. C. M.

1 MY God! the covenant of Thy love
Abides for ever sure;

And in its matchless grace I feel
My happiness secure.

2 What though my house be not with Thee As nature could desire;

To nobler joys than nature gives,
Thy servants all aspire.

3 Since Thou, the everlasting God,
My Father art become,

Jesus my guardian and my friend,
And heaven my final home;

4 I welcome all Thy sovereign will,
For all that will is love;

And when I know not what Thou dost,
I wait the light above.

5 Thy covenant in the darkest gloom
Shall heavenly rays impart,

Which, when my eyelids close in death, Shall warm my chilling heart.

'What have I to do any more with idols?" Hos. xiv. 8.

P. M.

1 COME, my fond, fluttering heart !
Come, struggle to be free.

Thou and the world must part,
However hard it be.

My trembling spirit owns it just,
But cleaves yet closer to the dust.

Ye tempting sweets, forbear:
Ye dearest idols, fall.

My love ye must not share:
Jesus shall have it all.

'Tis bitter pain, 'tis cruel smart;

But ah! thou must consent, my heart!

Ye fair enchanting throng,
Ye golden dreams, farewell!
Earth has prevailed too long,
And now I break the spell:
Ye cherished joys of early years :—
Jesus! forgive these parting tears.

But must I part with all?
My heart still fondly pleads.
Yes, Dagon's self must fall.
It beats, it throbs, it bleeds :---
Is there no balm in Gilead found,

To soothe, and heal the smarting wound?

5

Oh

6

yes,

there is a balm,

A kind Physician there,

My fevered mind to calm,

To bid me not despair.

Aid me, dear Saviour! set me free,

And I will all resign to Thee.

Oh may I feel Thy worth;
And let no idol dare,

No vanity of earth,

With Thee, my Lord, compare : Now bid all worldly joys depart, And reign supremely in my heart.

"Not my will, but thine be done." Luke xxii. 42.

C. M.

1 ONE prayer I have, all prayers in one,― When I am wholly Thine;

Thy will, my God! Thy will be done,
And let that will be mine.

2 All-wise, Almighty, and All-good!
In Thee I firmly trust.

Thy ways, unknown or understood,
Äre merciful and just.

3 Is life with many comforts crowned,
Upheld in peace and health,

With dear affections twined around?----
Lord in my time of wealth,-

4 May I remember, that to Thee
Whate'er I have I owe!

And back in gratitude from me,
May all Thy bounties flow.

5 Thy gifts are only then enjoyed,
When used as talents lent;
Those talents only well employed,
When in Thy service spent.

6 And though Thy wisdom takes away,
Shall I arraign Thy will?
No, let me bless Thy name, and say,
The Lord is gracious still.

7 A pilgrim through the earth I roam,
Of nothing long possessed;

And all must fail when I

For this is not my rest.
