19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

MARK i. 4, 5, 8 (twice), 9. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 5 And there went out unto him a'l the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of

Galilee, and was baptized of John in
Jordan.
MARK Vi.

14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. MARK Vii.

And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. MARK XVI.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

LUKE vii. 29, 30.

29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being haptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. 31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

JOHN iii. 22, 23 (twice), 26. 22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. 23 And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there and they came, and were baptized.

26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

ACTS ii. 38, 41.

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

ACTS viii. 12, 13, 16, 36, 38. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with

Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

ACTS ix.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. ACTS X. 47, 48.

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Twice-ACTS xi.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

ACTS xvi. 15, 33.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. ACTS. xviii.

8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

ACTS xix. 3, 4, 5.

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him

1 Cor. i. 13, 14, 15, 16 (twice), 17. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

MATT. XX. 22, 23.

29 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 3 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? LUKE xii.

(a) It is an important and universally recognized principle that the Biblical and classical usage of the same word is often very different, e.g., ayyeλoç, angel; #рEGβύτερος, presbyter or elder; ἐκκλησία, church; Baoikeia rov Оεov, or Tw ovpavwv, kingdom of God, or of heaven; aliyyevεoía, regeneration; xápis,grace; and many other words:

(F) Прεσẞúтεроs, superior by birth, and so greater, higher, of more importance; as a Noun it signifies an elder. From πρέoßνs, an old man. Occurs 68 times:
