(A) Yuyn, breath, especially as the sign of life, life, spirit: occurs in such phrases as risking one's life, running for one's life. (B) The soul of a man, in contrast to the body. In Homer, only a departed soul, spirit, ghost, which still retained the shape of its living owner. (y) Generally the soul or spirit of man, “ ἀνθρώπου Luxǹ áðávarós lori," the soul of man is immortal. “à μeλéa &vxý,” O wretched being. (d') Also the seat of the will, desires, and passions; “¿K TÕs vxns," from the inmost soul, with all the heart, desire, appetite. (E) The soul, the mind, reason, understanding. From vuxw, to breath, blow, to make cool, or cold. It occurs 106 times in the New Testament:

“ ως πότε τὴν ψυχὴν ἡμῶν αἴρεις ;” 2+Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

ACTS xiv.

“ ἐκάκωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς τῶν ἐθνῶν”

2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

EPH. vi.

“ ποιοῦντες τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκ ψυχῆς,”

Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers, but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

PHIL. i.

" μιᾷ ψυχῇ συναθλοῦντες τῇ πίστει τοῦ εὐανγγελίου”

27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel ;, COL. iii.

“ ἐκ ψυχῆς ἐργάζεσθε,” 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and unto men;

(B) IIvɛupa, wind, air. (B′) Breath, as | πνεῦμα βίου, breath of life, πνεῦμα ἀφιέ vai, to give up the ghost. (y) Life, soul, a spirit, a spiritual being: ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, the HOLY SPIRIT. (d) Metaphorically, spirit, feeling. From TVεvμaι Perf. Pass. of vεw, to blow, breath. It occurs in the following instances [omitting only those passages in which the word is qualified by Holy.
