They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue his people return hither: and waters of a walketh through the earth. 10 Therefore full cup are wrung out to them. 11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? they are utterly consumed with terrors. 20 Ás a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image. Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins. 22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee. 23 Nevertheless I holden me by my right hand. Thou am continually with thee: thou hast shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. 27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.

CHAPTER XIV.

THE ORIGINAL STATE OF MAN.

We must preface this inquiry with an attempt to answer certain psycological questions concerning the constitution of human nature, which are necessary to prepare the way for clearly understand ing the doctrines of Scripture as to the relation of man to God's moral govern ment-man's fall, estate in sin, regeneration and sanctification by the Holy Spirit: (a) That the soul of man is one single indivisible agent, not composed of parts: (b) That the several faculties called intellect, heart, conscience, and will are rather the capacity of the one agent, and are never to be regarded as separate, or as self-acting parts, or organs of the soul:

5. What is the conscience?

The inward faculty that judges between right and wrong:

ROM. ii.

13 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing one another;)

ORIGINAL STATE OF MAN:

11. How did God create man?

(a) In His own image:

GEN. i.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

(b) Out of the ground:

GEN. ii.

7 And the LORD God formed man

of the dust of the ground, and

breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

ECCL. xii.

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

COL. iii.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him :

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

ECCL. vii.

29 Lo, this only have I found, that

God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

12. Do the Scriptures certainly sanction the distinction we make between the material and spiritual elements of man's nature?

(a) The material was created first and the spirit afterwards imparted:

GEN. ii.

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

(6) Indicating our spiritual relation with the Father:

HEB. xii.

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

(c) In the account given of the dissolution:

ECCL. xii.

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

2 COR. v.

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

LUKE xxiii.

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

ACTS vii.

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

HEB. vi.

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

2 COR. v.

1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. "Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7(for we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

13. In what sense was man created in the image of God?

(a) As to his moral integrity : EPH. iv.

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

COL. iii.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

(6) Dignity and authority:

GEN. i.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

GEN. ii.

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them : and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

PSALM viii.

10 LORD our Lord, how excellent is

thy name in all the earth! who hast set

thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

(c) God pronounced him very good: GEN. i.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (d) This reasserted:

ECCL. vii.

29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

(e) Illustrated in his regeneration:
EPH. iv.

that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. *O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
