MATT. xi. 25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. 26 Even so, Father for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings: 15 that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine

as lights in the world; 16 holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

13. How may it be proved that the decree of God renders the event

certain?

(a) From the nature of the decree (see above):

(6) From the essential nature of God (see His Attributes):

(c) Scripture ascribes a certainty of futurition to the events decreed :

"As it was determined:"

LUKE xviii.

Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold. we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.

And they understood none of these things and this saying was hid from

them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. LUKE XXIV.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them. And he said unto them, These while I was yet with you, that all things are the words which I spake unto you, must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then might understand the Scriptures, opened he their understanding, that they

and be killed, and be raised again by wicked hands have crucified and the third day. slain :

15. What objection to this doctrine of unconditional decrees is derived from the admitted fact of man's free agency?

Objection :

Foreknowledge implies

the certainty of the event. The decree of God implies that He has determined it to be certain. But this implies upon the part of God an efficient agency in bringing about the event, which is inconsistent with the free agency of man: Answer:-It is the execution of the decree, and not the decree itself, that can interfere with the free agency of man. On the general subject refer to chapters on Providence, Effectual Calling, and Regeneration:

24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21 If a man

therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepa.ed unto every good work.
