AN ALLEGORY

TO THE GLORY OF THE EMPEROR FRANCIS I.

Peace being restored to Europe, after the treaty of 1815, and Germany, by that means, delivered from the yoke, to which she had been so long subjected; the Austrian government, ordered Fuger, the director of the Vienna gallery, to perpetuate the remembrance of this event. The painter wished to shew the gratitude of the people, inhabiting the banks of the Danube, towards the sovereign, who had freed them from their chains, and restored them to liberty. Religion supports the Emperor's bust, placed on a cippus; Peace and Victory are crowning it, and Plenty, which they have brought back, is spreading her benefactions over a country, that, for so many years, had been the scene of war.

This picture was the last painted by Frederic Henry Fuger, who died in 1818. It was, in 1821, engraved in mezzotinto by V. G. Kininger, under the title of Liberty restored to Germany. Height, 10 feet 7 inches; width, 8 feet 6 inches.

L'EUCHARISTIE.

Comme pour le sacrement de la Pénitence, c'est le moment. de son institution que Poussin a voulu représenter, et de même que dans ce dernier, il a placé Jésus-Christ et les apôtres sur un triclinium, suivant l'usage des anciens. Le Sauveur tient à la main une coupe, et prononce les paroles qui depuis sont répétées par le prêtre au moment de la consécration : « Ceci est le calice de mon sang, du nouveau et éternel testament qui sera répandu pour vous et pour plusieurs pour la rémission des péchés. Toutes les fois que vous ferez ces choses, faites-les en mémoire de moi. x

La scène est éclairée par une lampe à trois becs suspendue au milieu de la salle : par ce moyen le tableau présente un effet de lumière; mais la couleur n'étant pas la partie dans laquelle Poussin se soit distingué, il en résulte qu'il ne peut être classé parmi les ouvrages les plus remarquables du peintre.

Ce tableau fut le sixième de la suite dont Poussin s'occupa; il l'envoya à M. de Chantelou à la fin de l'année 1647. Larg., 5 pieds 4 pouces; haut., 3 pieds 7 pouces.

THE LORD'S SUPPER.

As in the Sacrament of Penitence, it is the moment of its institution, that is represented; and similarly to the latter, Jesus Christ and the Apostles are placed on a Triclinium, according to the custom of the ancients. Our Saviour is holding a cup in his hand, and is pronouncing the words which are repeated by the priest at the moment of consecration : « This is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. This do in remembrance of me. »

The scene is illuminated by a lamp, with three burners, suspended in the middle of the room: by this means the picture presents an effect of light; but, as colouring, was not the part in which Poussin distinguished himself, there results, that it cannot be classed among the most remarkable works of that painter.

This picture was the sixth, in the series, at which Poussin worked: he sent it to M. Chantelou at the end of the year 1647. Width, 5 feet 8 inches; height, 3 feet 9 inches.
