UN SOLDAT A WATERLOO.

M. Horace Vernet, dont le talent est si varié, a souvent tracé des scènes militaires de l'histoire moderne. Ici un grenadier de la garde impériale se repose avec douleur sur un tertre sépulcral, où dorment d'un sommeil glorieux quelques uns de ses compagnons morts sur le champ de bataille, où la veille huit cents pièces de canon répandaient la terreur et la mort au milieu de trois cent mille combattans rassemblés de tous les coins du inonde.

Le soleil se couche; ses derniers feux colorent la scène. Le guerrier, accablé de fatigue, après avoir donné la sépulture à des camarades, à des amis, donne un dernier soupir à ses drapeaux, une dernière pensée à notre gloire.

Ce petit tableau, plein de sentiment et d'expression, est d'une couleur vigoureuse et brillante. Il appartient à S.A. R. monseigneur le duc d'Orléans. Il a été gravé en mezzotinte par Jazet, et lithographié par M. Weber.

A SOLDIER AT WATERLOO.

Horace Vernet, whose talent is so varied, has often represented military scenes taken from modern history. Here a grenadier of the Imperial Guards is mournfully resting upon a sepulchral mound, under which sleep in glory several of his comrades, who died on the field of battle, where, the preceding day, eight hundred of pieces of canon spread terror and death amidst three hundred thousand combatants, gathered from all parts of the world.

The sun is setting, and his last rays illumine the scene. The warrior, overpowered by fatigue, after having buried his comrades and friends, gives a last sigh to his banners, a last thought to glory.

This small picture, which in full of feeling and expression, is of a vigorous and brilliant colouring. It belongs to his Royal Highness the duke of Orleans. It has been engraved in mezzotinto by Jazet, and done in lithography by Mr Weber.
