Les détails historiques relatifs à l'histoire d'Abraham ont été donnés lorsque nous avons eu à traiter le même sujet, sous le no 302. Cette composition offre plus de noblesse que celle de Rembrandt, mais la tête d'Abraham est d'une bien plus belle expression dans le tableau du peintre hollandais. C'est une singulière inconséquence, difficile à pardonner au peintre florentin, d'avoir placé un autel grec dans un sujet qui se passait en Palestine, deux mille ans avant Jésus-Christ. Le peintre André Vanucci, plus connu sous le nom d'André del Sarte, en faisant ce tableau, avait l'intention de l'offrir au roi François Ier, afin de regagner les bonnes graces du monarque, qu'il avait mécontenté en dépensant pour ses plaisirs l'argent qui lui avait été confié pour acheter des tableaux de prix. Mais le roi ne voulut pas pardonner au peintre son infidélité, et il refusa le tableau, qui fut acheté par don Alphonse d'Avalos, marquis del Vasto. Le duc de Modène en fit ensuite l'acquisition, et il vint depuis à Dresde, lorsque ce prince vendit toute sa collection à l'électeur Frédéric-Auguste, roi de Pologne. C'est à tort que Terhove a prétendu que ce tableau avait appartenu au prince d'Orange. Le Sacrifice d'Abraham est peint sur bois; il a été gravé par Louis Surugue. The historical particulars relative to Abraham's history were given, when we before had (no 302) the same subject to describe. This composition presents more grandeur than Rembrandt's; but in the picture of the Dutch artist, the head of Abraham offers a much finer expression. It is a singular incoherence, and almost unpardonable, in the Florentine painter, to have placed a greek altar, in a scene, which occurred in Palestine, two thousand years before Jesus Christ. Andrea Vanucci, better known by the name of Andrea del Sarto, intended, when painting this picture, to present it to Francis I, in order to regain the good graces of that monarch, whom he had irritated, by spending, in his own pleasures, the money which had been entrusted to him for the purchasing of some valuable pictures. But the king would not forgive the artist's want of fidelity, and refused the picture, which was bought by don Alfonso d'Avalos, marquis del Vasto. The duke of Modena purchased it afterwards; and it subsequently came to Dresden, when the prince sold the whole of his collection to the elector Frederic Augustus, king of Poland. Terhove is in an error, to have advanced that this picture had belonged to the prince of Orange. Abraham's Sacrifice is painted on wood: it has been engraved by Louis Surugue.
