JOUEURS DE CARTES.

Les scènes représentées par Teniers dans ses tableaux sont ordinairement remarquables par leur naïveté, par la vérité et la finesse avec lesquelles elles sont rendues. Deux hommes jouent aux cartes dans un cabaret; trois autres paraissent prendre part à leur jeu; vers la gauche, l'hôte marque avec de la craie, sur un poteau, le nombre de pots de bière déjà bus, tandis qu'à droite un valet sort, pour aller encore chercher de quoi augmenter la dépense.

Le coloris de ce joli tableau est vigoureux, et pourtant argentin; sa touche est spirituelle, facile et moelleuse. Le groupe des joueurs est frappé par une vive lumière bien dégradée dans ses diverses parties. Le joueur qui est à droite, sur le devant, est vêtu de gris, celui que l'on voit à gauche porte un habit bleuâtre. Les regards sont appelés vers le centre du groupe par l'éclat d'un bonnet blanc dont est coiffé l'un des joueurs, et aussi par la couleur rouge du bonnet qui couvre la tête du paysan assis à côté de lui.

Le nom de Teniers se trouve auprès des ustensiles que l'on voit à droite, et l'année 1650 est écrite sur la feuille où est un petit portrait cloué sur le mur dans le fond. Ce tableau, peint sur bois, est maintenant au palais de Turin. Il a été gravé par H. Guttenberg.

CARD PLAYERS.

The scenes represented in Teniers' pictures are generally remarkable only for their simplicity, and the truth and quaintness with which they are rendered. Two men, in a public house, are playing at cards: three others appear to take an interest in the game: towards the left, the landlord is chalking up, on a post, the number of pots of beer already drunk, whilst on the right hand, a waiter is going out, to fetch what will increase the score.

The colouring of this pretty picture is strong, and yet silvery; the penciling is light, easy, and soft. A full light, nicely degraded in its various tints, falls on the group that are playing. The player who is to the right, in the fore-ground, is clothed in grey, the other to the left, wears a bluish dress. The attention is attracted towards the middle of the group, by the brightness of a white cap, worn by one of the players, and also by the red colour of the cap on the countryman's head, who is seated near him.

The name of Teniers is seen near the kitchen utensils, to the right; and the year 1650 is written on the paper upon which is a small portrait, nailed to the wall. This picture, which is painted on wood, is now in the palace of Turin: it has been engraved by Guttenberg.
