LOTH ET SES FILLES.

Les habitans de Sodome ayant encouru la colère divine à cause de leur conduite criminelle, la ville fut entièrement consumée par le feu céleste; mais Loth, prévenu par l'ange, en avait fui précipitamment avec sa famille, et s'était retiré sur une montagne voisine. Pendant le trajet, sa femme, pour son indiscrète curiosité, fut changée en statue, et le malheureux patriarche se trouva seul avec ses deux filles, dans une caverne.

Ainsi que nous l'avons déja dit à l'article de Booz et Ruth (no 65), la stérilité était regardée, dans la religion des Israélites, comme un témoignage de réprobation. Les liens du sang n'étaient pas un obstacle au mariage; au contraire, dans certains cas les plus proches parens étaient obligés de s'épouser. Les filles de Loth, pensant donc qu'il ne restait plus d'hommes sur la terre, se crurent destinées à perpétuer la race de leur père : l'ayant donc enivré, elles concurent, et devinrent mères, l'une de Moab, et l'autre d'Ammon, d'où naquirent par la suite deux peuples nombreux, si connus dans l'histoire ancienne, sous les noms de Moabites et d'Ammonites.

Les tableaux de Giordano sont très variés dans leur faire; il s'en trouve fort peu d'aussi beaux que celui-ci : on y remarque, plus que dans aucun autre, la manière de Ribera, son maître; cependant le coloris en est plus frais, sans être moins vigoureux.

LOT AND HIS DAUGHTERS.

The inhabitants of Sodom having, through their criminal conduct, incurred the divine wrath, their town was wholly consumed by fire from heaven. But Lot, forewarned by the angel, had fled precipitately, with his family; and he withdrew to a neighbouring mountain. During their flight, his wife was changed into a statue, as a punishment for her indiscreet curiosity; and thus the unfortunate patriarch found himself alone, in a cave, with his two daughters.

According to what has been already mentioned in the subject of Boaz and Ruth (no 65), barrenness, was looked upon, in the jewish religion, as a mark of reprobation. The ties of blood were no obstacle to marriage, but on the contrary, in certain cases, the nearest relations were obliged to marry. Lot's daughters, thinking then, that there no longer remained any men on the earth, believed themselves destined to preserve their father's seed : having therefore made him drink wine, they conceived, and bare; the one, Moab; and the other BenAmmi; from whom, subsequently sprang two numerous nations, well known in ancient history, under the names of the Moabites and the Ammonites.

Giordano's pictures vary greatly in the execution; there are few of them so beautiful as this: the style of Ribera, his master, appears in it, more than in any other; yet the colouring has more freshness, without being less vigorous.
