Larg., 10 pieds; haut., 5 pieds 10 pouces.

After the victory which David had gained over the giant Goliah; the people of Israel testified their joy in so strong a manner, that Saul sought to destroy him. Nevertheless David, feeling himself upheld by the spirit of the Lord, endeavoured to calm the fury of Saul, and succeeded therein, by means of the harmonious sounds of his harp.

This subject, seldom taken by painters, has been treated by M. Gros, in a picture, which appeared at the Exhibition, in 1822.

It has been objected that although the author has chosen a larger size than easel pictures, still it did not allow him to have the figures of a natural height. It has also been remarked that the figures, in the back-ground, were too small, comparatively to that of Saul: even the colouring, and the crimson tone which reigns generally in the flesh, the draperies and accessories; have been criticised, as somewhat overcharged.

This picture forms part of the Orleans' gallery: and it has been done in lithography, by M. Fragonard.

Width, 10 feet 7 inches; height, 6 feet 2 inches.
