La dénomination de ce tableau laisse un peu d'ambiguité dans l'esprit, car on parle ordinairement des quatre âges, et on voit ici quatre personnages; mais le peintre a voulu faire entendre que « dans le voyage de la vie, la femme est le guide, le charme et le soutien de l'homme.» Cette pensée, tirée d'un auteur oriental, est pleine de sentiment, et M. Gérard l'a rendue avec beaucoup de grace. Les figures sont dans un repos parfait, très bien groupées; la couleur est brillante et la touche vigoureuse. On pourrait seulement s'étonner de ce que la mère ne porte pas plus d'attention à son enfant, et aussi de ce que son affection paraît également partagée entre son père et son mari. Ce tableau a été fait pour la reine de Naples; il parut au salon de 1808 et a été gravé par M. Pigeot. La même composition se trouve chez S. A. R. Mer le duc d'Orléans, mais dans une dimension beaucoup plus petite, et qui pourtant laisse voir, avec autant d'avantage, les talens de l'auteur. Larg., 10 pieds; haut., 8 pieds. The title given to this picture throws a little obscurity in the mind, as generally, four ages are spoken of, and four personages are seen here but the artist has wished to impart that, « in life's journey, woman is the guide, the delight, and the prop of man. This thought, taken from an oriental writer, is full of feeling, and M. Gérard has rendered it with much grace. The figures are in a perfect repose, and well grouped; the colouring is brilliant and the penciling bold. It may certainly excite astonishment, that the mother does not yield more attention to her child, and also, that her affection appears equally divided between her father and her husband. This picture, which was painted for the queen of Naples, appeared in the exhibition of 1808, and has been engraved by M. Pigeot. The same composition is in the duke of Orléans' Collection but in a much smaller size, which, nevertheless, displays the author's talent, to as much advantage.
