DEUX FUMEURS.

Sur le devant de ce tableau sont assis deux hommes qui se préparent à fumer. L'un d'eux allume déja sa pipe, tandis que l'autre est encore occupé à la charger. Tous deux sont remarquables par l'attention qu'ils apportent à l'objet dont ils s'occupent, tandis que dans le fond quatre autres fumeurs sont groupés auprès de la cheminée. Les personnes qui ont eu l'occasion de considérer ce charmant tableau se rappelleront sans doute l'esprit et la vérité qui animent tous les détails; l'admirable effet pittoresque de la figure placée sur le devant, ainsi que les traits énergiques du personnage principal; la lumière large qui frappe sur sa tête, sur son bonnet bleu, sur sa redingotte d'un gris jaunâtre, et sur son habit d'un gris foncé; l'habileté enfin avec laquelle le peintre a su faire dominer cette figure, sans rien sacrifier de ce qui l'environne, dans un ensemble dont tous les tons sont clairs et argentins.

TWO SMOKERS.

In the fore-ground of this picture, two men are seated, preparing to smoke. One of them has already lighted his pipe, whilst the other is yet engaged in filling his. Both are remarkable for the attention they are paying to the object that occupies them : in the back-ground, near the chimney, are grouped four other smokers. Those persons, who have had an opportunity of seeing this charming picture, will no doubt. remember the spirit and truth, which animate all the details; the admirable and picturesque effect of the figure placed in front; as also, the striking features of the principal personage; the broad light that falls on his head, on his blue cap, on his surtout of a yellowish grey, and on his coat of a deep grey; in a word, the skill with which the painter has made this figure to predominate, without however sacrificing to it, any of the surrounding objects, in an ensemble, all the tints of which are bright and silvery.
