The Higher Function of Medicine.

Eminent bacteriologists through untiring zeal have clearly demonstrated by investigation and experimentation that germs are unmistakably the exciting cause of disease. So numerous are the avenues leading into our systems, that legions of these microscopical anarchists are at all times circulating through them, seeking a suitable indus wherein they may procreate and establish their sovereignty.

Should our bodies at all times be kept at or above par, we would in no instance be made aware of the presence of these germs, but if from any cause our systems become damaged, or if there be a scant or unhealthy supply of blood to all parts of our bodies, then a change in cell tissue takes place, resulting in a diminished power of resistance, which places us within the grasp of these morbific agents.

"The higher function of medicine," says Dr. Thomas, “is not to combat but to prevent disease." And these same eminent bacteriologists, who have so clearly shown that germs are the exciting cause of disease, as boldly assert that normal or healthy blood serum is antagonistic to germ life. When in this state it is selfprotective and bids defiance to the invasion of disease germs.

The nearer a remedy combines nutritive and therapeutic properties the greater is its power as a prophylaxis, or as a restorative in disease. Scott's Emulsion of cod liver oil with the hypophosphites of lime and soda, meets just these requirements. Nutritive and therapeutic energies are combined in this emulsion to a high degree. Scott's Emulsion will prevent or quickly check the tendency to destructive changes in the body, and at the same time furnishes the needed elements for structural repair and healthy growth.

You Live in the Present

not in the past. You have need of the freshest information. Journals that discuss dead issues and exploded theories have but small value for you. MERCK'S BULLETIN is progressive and yet withal safe. It is abreast with the times. It gives in small compass just the information live physicians and surgeons require. It has the best writers from home and abroad-indeed, spends more in one month for contributions than many medical journals do in an entire year.

We would like to send you a sample copy, free of charge. Will you write for it?

HOW EMINENT CLINICAL TEACHERS ATTAIN IT.

אן •

IN visceral troubles which defy all treatment, the physician may accomplish in many cases a true and real cure by the application of ordinary physiological agents, and above all of hydrotherapy.

"The methodical internal and external application of water, together with diet, exercise, etc., are the means by which often real marvels of recovery are obtained in serious and desperate cases," says Prof. Semmola (p. 230 Clinical Therapeutics).

'Herein lies the unsurpassed value of cold water in therapeutics. It affords an invigoration of the nervous system, the muscles and the entire circulatory apparatus, which taxes the organism but moderately, and therefore is one of the most favored tonic remedies (p. 369). I am convinced that in time all chronic diseases of the organs will be drawn into the domain of the bath treatment." (p. 385), says Prof. Hoffman, of Leipzig (Lectures on General Therapeutics), Chronic, Gastric and Intestinal Troubles, Rheumatism, Bright's Disease, Diabetes, Chlorosis and Phthisis become more tractable if some form of bathing is added to the treatment.

"The effect of baths," says Prof. Erb, "is extraordinarily favorable in all possible forms of chronic nerve troubles." Neurasthenia, Sciatica and other Neuralgias, Hysteria, Neuritis, Chorea, etc., belong to this category Of baths in Locomotor-Ataxia, Prof Leyden says (Real Encyclopedia Bd. 19), "These belong to the most important methods in tabes, and their correct and cautious use is of the greatest significance. Hydrotherapy is now applied in institutions with so much judgment and moderation that patients may be safely sent to them."

These opinions would confirm the following: "In many chronic diseases it has proven so successful after failures of medicinal agents, that no case should be yielded up as hopeless until Hydrotherapy in some form has been tried." (Hare's System of Therapeutics, p 514, vol. I).

Physicians referring patients with a brief history and diagnosis may have them judiciously treated by this method at the HYDRIATRIC INSTITUTE, No. 635 Park Ave., New York City, and retain them under their own care if they prefer. Out-of-town patients will be provided with suitable lodgings.
