THIRTY-FIRST EVENING.

LORD God Almighty, who hearest the prayers of all who devoutly call upon Thy name, we kneel down to make our supplications unto Thee this night, imploring Thee to take us under Thy protection, and to pardon also every sin which we may this day have committed against Thee.

We, at the same time, beseech Thee to impress upon us the importance of eternal things. May we be deeply persuaded, through the powerful help of Thy Holy Spirit, that we can never prize our salvation too highly, nor strive too earnestly or unceasingly after it. Teach us to remember that we are dying creatures, who must soon enter into eternity, and must either rise to a state of immortal happiness or sink into everlasting despair. May we never forget that "one thing is needful,” and may we, comparatively, despise all the things of this world, while we think of that better part which can never be taken from us.

And pour out upon us, we beseech Thee, the spirit of wisdom and of a sound mind. Deliver us from every error by which we may be in danger of being deceived. Convince us of the evil which hath been hidden in our hearts, and of the many sins which in our lives we have committed. And do Thou bestow upon us deep repentance for them; and at the same time grant us such a lively faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, that we may be comforted by the hope of His pardoning mercy, and may be encouraged in pursuing our Christian course.

We would also implore Thee, as the God of providence, to suit Thy various dispensations towards us to our several cases and necessities. Send us, we beseech Thee, such circumstances in life, such degrees of health, such friends, and such opportunities of instruction, as may most effectually tend to promote the edification and salvation of our souls. May Thy Holy Spirit dwell within us, and may all things which befall us be ordered by Thee for our good. And may we see and adore Thy hand, both in Thy chastisements and in Thy mercies; and be enabled always to say, "It is the Lord that giveth and the Lord that taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

And now, O Lord, if we have this day misspent our time, or have forgotten Thee, or have in any wise sinned against Thee, we here implore Thy pardon, in the name of Jesus Christ.

We present these and all our prayers through the merits and mediation of the same blessed Saviour.

FIRST SATURDAY EVENING.

LORD, we desire to close this day and this week with prayer to Thee. Pardon, we beseech Thee, for Christ's sake, the sins which we have committed. They are many and great. Hour after hour our thoughts have dwelt on the things of this world, but how seldom have they been turned towards heaven. We have not been thankful for Thy blessings. We have not been watchful over our own hearts. We have allowed many hidden and secret sins to dwell within us. We have loved this present world too dearly, and we have loved Thee, O God, too little. We have lived too much as if this was our resting-place and our home. For these things, and for all that Thou seest amiss in us, Father, forgive us. Let not our sins separate us from Thee. Accept us in Christ, and for His sake look mercifully upon us. We thank Thee that there is in Him a fulness to meet all our need, a fulness of mercy to pardon us, a fulness of grace to help us, a fulness of love to bear with us. O supply all our need out of that fulness.

Lord, make us holy; for without holiness we can neither be happy here, nor happy hereafter. Show us our besetting sins, and give us strength to overcome them. Enable us to put them away, however dear to us they may be. Grant that each day, and each week, as it comes round, may find us making progress in our heavenly course. Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, may we be ever pressing towards the mark for the prize of our high calling in Christ Jesus. Teach us, O God, to remember that our race will soon be run. O that we may then receive the crown of life, and be admitted into Thy joy. And now, heavenly Father, we ask Thee to prepare us for the holy day before us. If we are spared to see it, may we awake with solemn thoughts and thankful feelings, May we love Thy day, and feel it to be the best of all the seven. Grant that it may be a day of blessing to us, a day laden with mercies to our souls. Enable us to-morrow not only to cease from all needless employments, but to shut the world out of our hearts, and may it be a day given to Thee.

We now entrust ourselves and all who are dear to us to Thy almighty care. When our eyes are closed in sleep, be Thou our ever-watchful Guardian. If Thou art with us, no evil can happen to us. Order all that concerns us, and may we never take a single step without Thy guidance and direction. Give us grateful hearts now, and may we hereafter praise Thee in Thy courts above, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SECOND SATURDAY EVENING.

ETERNAL God, at Thy bidding we draw near to Thee, pleading the merits of Christ our Saviour. Hear us for His name's sake. Brought by Thy kind providence in peace and safety to the close of another week, we come to thank Thee for Thy fatherly care. Day by day Thou hast watched over us and kept us from cvil. We thank Thee for earthly comforts and blessings. We thank Thee for spiritual privileges and means of grace. We thank Thee for any comfort and instruction which we have found in Thy holy Word, and for any moments of communion with Thee which we have enjoyed in prayer. O Lord, with shame we acknowledge that it is through our own sin and unbelief alone that Thy Word has not been more profitable to us, and prayer more delightful.

We entreat Thee to bestow upon us Thy pardoning mercy. Forgive, we pray Thee, our many sins and shortcomings, negligences and ignorances. Forgive our wasted time and misemployed talents. We fly for refuge, O blessed Saviour, to Thy cross. We would wash in the fountain of Thy precious blood. O make us clean, purge away our stains of guilt, and let Thy love constrain us to love Thee more and serve Thee better.

And now, O Lord, fit and prepare us for Thy day of rest. When we lie down this night upon our beds, may we lay aside for a while all those earthly cares which have harassed us through the week. Breathe into our minds a holy calmness, and let Thy peace fill our hearts. Grant us such refreshing rest as may strengthen us for the sacred employments of Thine own day. And do Thou awaken in us earnest desires after spiritual blessings. Make us so deeply to feel our ignorance and weakness, that we may thankfully come to Thee for instruction and strength. Lord, our eyes are unto Thee, and our expectations from Thee. Without Thee Sabbaths must

be days of weariness, and solemn ordinances unprofitable. But be Thou Thyself with us on the morrow. May we begin Thy day in a holy, happy frame of mind, and enjoy Thy presence through all its sacred hours.

Take us now, O Lord, under Thy gracious care. As days and weeks pass away, may we be found growing in meetness for Thy kingdom. Thou knowest how short our time is; teach us to know and feel it also. Give us grace so to consider our latter end as to be ever carefully preparing for it. Help us to redeem the time, and work whilst it is yet day. And when our earthly pilgrimage is ended, O take us to Thine everlasting rest, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

THIRD

SATURDAY

EVENING.

GOD, who makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice, receive our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving for Jesus Christ's sake. Thou hast brought us in safety to the close of another day and another week. Heavenly Father, what mercies have we throughout this week received daily at Thy hand! How graciously hast Thou watched over us! how bountifully hast Thou supplied our wants! from how many unseen evils and dangers hast Thou preserved us! We thank Thee also that each day Thou hast spoken unto us by Thy Word, and that we have had the privilege of approaching Thee at all times in prayer.

Lord, we acknowledge that we have made most unworthy returns for all Thy many mercies. Pardon, for Christ's sake, our numberless sins and shortcomings during the week that is past. We have left undone many things which we ought to have done, and we have done much for which our own consciences condemn us. Enter not into judgment with us, O Lord. Deal not with us according to our merits, but according to Thy tender mercies in Christ Jesus our Redeemer.

Do Thou, Lord, quicken our souls, and revive Thy work in us. Thou knowest how ready we are to become careless and slothful in the great things which concern our eternal welfare. Grant us, O Lord, Thy quickening grace. May Thy Holy Spirit keep ever fresh in our minds the recollection of all that Christ hath done for us, that we may be constrained by His love to yield ourselves a willing sacrifice to Him.

And now, O Lord, prepare us for the rest of Thine own holy Sabbathday. When for a little season we lay aside the toils of the week, may we also lay aside its cares and anxieties. Let nothing disturb and distract us while we wait upon Thee. May we be in the Spirit on the Lord's day. Cause us to hunger and thirst after righteousness. Fill us with devout and earnest longings to see Thy power and Thy glory in the sanctuary. May we, as new-born babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that we may grow thereby.

Keep us through this night in safety. Refresh us with peaceful rest, so that in body and spirit we may be prepared for the services of Thine own day. And grant, O Lord, that as days and weeks pass away, and bring us continually nearer to eternity, we may be made daily more meet for the inheritance of the saints of light. Hear these our supplications, we pray Thee, for the Redeemer's sake. Amen.

FOURTH SATURDAY EVENING.

LMIGHTY Lord God, we humbly beseech Thee to receive the thank-offer.

ALM

ings which we desire now to present on Thy altar. We would raise a memorial of Thy abundant kindness, and tell out Thy works with gladness. Thy ways towards us have been faithfulness and truth. Thou hast done for us more than we have either desired or deserved, and far more than we are able to express. Who can utter Thy mighty acts, O Lord, or show forth all Thy praise? Grant, Lord, that from the abundance of the heart we may speak Thy praise; and that at the close of every week we may be found growing in grace, in thankfulness, and in every fruit of the Spirit. Especially may a sense of Thy wonderful love in the redemption of our souls ever abide upon our minds. And since Thou hast given Thy Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification, grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may always serve Thee in pureness of living and truth; and at His second coming to judge the world in righteousness, may be found an acceptable people in Thy sight.

But who may abide the day of His coming? And who may stand when He appeareth? We cannot stand before Thee, O Lord, in our own righteousness. We humble ourselves at Thy footstool, acknowledging the sins which we have committed against Thee, particularly the sins of the week which is now closing. And we pray Thee to grant unto us forgiveness of all that is past, through Him, who, by Thy grace, tasted death for every man. For His sake cleanse Thou us from all our offences, and grant that, being justified by His blood, we may be saved from wrath through Him.

To Thy tender mercies in Christ Jesus we now commit ourselves, and all for whom we should pray. Save and defend us through the night-season. Open our eyes to see the light of another Sabbath, and sanctify it to the good of our souls.

And as Thou hast promised that of the increase and prosperity of Thy kingdom there shall be no end, give Thy blessing to the means which are employed for its extension throughout the world. Let the time draw near when the whole earth shall be filled with Thy glory, and when every thing that hath breath shall praise Thee. Bring to pass that which is written, that in the last days the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all cations shall flow unto it.

We ask all in the name of our Mediator Jesus Christ. Amen.
