Thy Holy Spirit, that we may be renewed in heart, that we may embrace the blessed promises of Thy Word, and be made partakers of Thy heavenly kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, Thou hast sent Thy Son to be both a sacrifice for our sins, and also an example of a godly life. Enable us to come unto Him, and to walk in His steps. Take away from us every sinful and unholy temper, and teach us to be gentle and kind. May we have that meek and lowly spirit which was in our blessed Saviour; and learn to do unto all as we would have them do unto us. May we obey our parents, and try in every way to promote their comfort and happiness. May we be kind and affectionate to our brothers and sisters, and lay aside all malice and anger, and evil speaking. May we live in peace and love with all men, and adorn the doctrine of our Lord in all our conduct. Above all, may we have a heart to love and praise Thee, seeking Thy favor and forgiveness in daily prayer, delighting in the study of Thy holy Word, and endeavoring every day to walk humbly with Thee, our God. Give us that holiness of heart, without which no man shall see the Lord, and enable us to grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Let all our conduct show forth Thy praise, and may we strive to have every action approved in Thy sight. Oh, may we seek Thee early, and seek Thee always, that we may find Thee as our portion for ever, and be rendered meet to be partakers of Thy heavenly inheritance. And when all our precious opportunities of religious instruction and worship in this life are finished, may we be received into Thy eternal and heavenly kingdom, through the merits of our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

UR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name: Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and Amen.

Prayer

FOR A

MEETING OF SUNDAY-SCHOOL TEACHERS.

ALMIGHTY God, be with us, we beseech Thee, in our present meeting;

and may all our counsels be ordered in heavenly wisdom, and crowned with Thine abundant blessing. Graciously instruct us, that we may know the mind of the Spirit in Holy Scripture. Qualify us in heart and soul for the work committed to our trust, that so we may impart of that which we have received, and be Thine instruments in leading many into the way of life.

And we beseech Thee of Thine infinite mercies, O God, to bless the children who are given to our charge. Open their understandings and dispose their hearts to receive Thy truth, which is able to make them wise unto salvation. Awaken in their minds by Thy Spirit a deep sense of their sinfulness, and bring them to ask and receive the mercy which is in Christ Jesus. Let them fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger of soul or body. Grant, if it be consistent with Thy wisdom, that their lives may be prolonged on the earth. Prepare them, by Thy grace, to fill with honor to themselves and usefulness to the world every station of life to which Thy providence shall call them; and let it please Thee, O Lord, to raise up from among them those who shall testify for Thee in the gospel of Thy Son. And when they shall have served Thee in their day, may they be gathered into Thy kingdom in heaven, there to rest in an eternal Sabbath from sorrow, labor, and care.

Give Thy grace, we implore Thee, to all parents, sponsors, and guardians, that with all diligence and affection of heart they may train up the children of their charge in the way in which they should go.

Bestow Thy special blessing upon Thy servant whom Thou hast appointed to minister to us in the gospel of Christ; that he may be led by the Spirit, and faithfully serve before Thee to the glory of Thy name; and that his labors may be abundantly blessed in winning souls to righteousness, and crowned with acceptance in the day of the Lord Jesus. These things, and whatever else Thou shalt see necessary and convenient for him, for us, and for Thy whole Church, we humbly ask through the merits of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Family Prayers.

When occasion calls for it, these Prayers, slightly modified, may be used to advantage in Social and Prayer Meetings.

FIRST MORNING.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live, and move, and have

ALMIGHT

our being; we, Thy needy creatures, render Thee our humble praises, for Thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. To Thy watchful providence we owe it that no disturbance hath come nigh us or our dwelling: but that we are brought in safety to the beginning of this day. For these Thy mercies we bless and magnify Thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching Thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for His sake who lay down in the grave and rose again for us, Thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.

And since it is of Thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives, we here dedicate both our souls and bodies to Thee and Thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do Thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

But, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; we humbly beseech Thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of Thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and excited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of Thy judgments, and such a grateful sense of Thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend Thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions; and according to the

works done in the body, be eternally rewarded or punished by Him whom Thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

In particular, we implore Thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in our meats and drinks, and diligent in our several callings. Grant us patience under any afflictions Thou shalt see fit to lay on us, and minds always contented with our present condition. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways, and prosper the works of our hands in the business of our several stations. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us and all things belonging to us under Thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else Thou shalt see necessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

SECOND MORNING.

LORD God Almighty, who art the Creator and the Governor of the world, and hast abundantly provided for the various wants of Thy creatures; who hast ordered the day and the night to succeed each other, and when Thou hast refreshed man with sleep, requirest him to pursue his work until the evening; who hast also ordained that he shall be born to trouble, and hast appointed the grave to be the end of all living; We thank Thee that, while Thou hast thus placed our lot in this life, Thou hast not left us without hope in that world which is to come. We adore Thee for the gift of Jesus Christ Thy Son, by whose gospel life and immortality are brought to light, and we are fully instructed in all those things which concern our

salvation. We bless Thee for the pardon of sin, through faith in a Redeemer; for the guidance of Thy providence; and for the consolations of Thy Spirit. We thank Thee for Thy holy Sabbaths; for Thy written word; and for all the other means of grace which Thou hast entrusted to us.

Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may this day pursue with fidelity and diligence that work which Thou hast assigned to us; and that we may at the same time maintain a spiritual and heavenly mind. In the midst of life we are in death; O let us remember this awful truth; and let us live this day as we shall wish that we had done if it should indeed prove our last. Save us from the sins to which we are most prone. Leave us not to the natural dispositions of our own minds, which are ever inclining us to evil; but put Thy Spirit within us, and teach us to cultivate every Christian temper, and to abound in every good work. Strengthen our faith in the glorious promises of the gospel; and fill us with that joy and peace in believing, which shall be more than a compensation for all the temporal sacrifices to which we may be called. Dispose us to bear affliction with a patient and quiet mind; or if Thou shouldest continue to us prosperity, to be ever watchful over ourselves, and moderate in our enjoyments; and let us impart freely to others the good gifts which Thou showerest down upon us. Inspire us with zeal in the fulfilment of our relative duties; with integrity in our dealings; and the spirit of kindness to all men. Let us continually examine ourselves; and advancing in self-knowledge, let us prevail over our several infirmities. Let us grow in grace, and in all goodness, and in meetness for Thy heavenly kingdom.

We pray for Thy blessing on all our friends and relations: may they also be filled with the knowledge of Thy will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; and may we and they be of one heart and one mind, loving each other as brethren in Christ, and uniting our endeavors to promote both the good of all men and Thy glory.

Have mercy on the poor and the afflicted; strengthen the weak; succor the tempted; and guide the ignorant into the way of knowledge.

Bless the rising generation; save them from the danger of this evil world; sanctify to them the events which shall befall them; make them instruments in Thy hand for the advancement of the interests of Thy Church on earth, and members of Thy blessed family in heaven,

We offer these our humble and imperfect prayers in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
