have grace to hear and receive what he shall deliver out of Thy most holy Word, or agreeable to the same, as the means of their salvation; so that all may seek Thy glory, and the increase of Thy kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then let the Presbyter to be received kneel, and the Bishop and Presbyters present lay their hands on his head, the Bishop saying:

BROTHER, take thou authority to execute in this Church the office of a

Presbyter, to which thou hast already been ordained, and be thou a faithful dispenser of the Word of God and of the Christian ordinances; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Then let the Bishop deliver a charge to the newly-received Presbyter, as follows:

R

EVEREND Brother, we welcome you to the work of the Lord in this our portion of His vineyard. For while the Church of Christ is one, and never to be divided, yet, nevertheless, within this unity it hath varieties of service and order and worship, which His people may adopt or change according to their individual sentiments or views, without overstepping the main bounda ries of the kingdom.

And now, in making this change in your department of labor, suffer us to recall to your mind how weighty an office you fill in being a messenger, watchman, and steward of the Lord; set forth to teach, to warn, and to provide for the Lord's family, to seek for Christ's sheep that are dispersed abroad, and for His children that are in the midst of this naughty world, that they may be saved through Christ for ever.

May your labor, care, and diligence ever be exerted, through the heavenly assistance of the Holy Ghost, for the successful issue of this great work, so that at last your account may be rendered to the Great Shepherd with joy and not with grief. May there be many witnesses, in the great day, to your zeal and fidelity, and may many stars be added to your crown of rejoicing.

A suitable Hymn may then be sung, and Collects or extempore Prayers at the discretion of the Minister.

After which this Benediction:

THE

HE God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant; Make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE.-Tim, iv, 6.

F thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little; but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God who is the Saviour of all men, especially of those that believe. These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in . them; for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee.

THEN

THE GOSPEL.-Matt. xx. 20.

HEN came to Him the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshiping Him, and desiring a certain thing of Him. And He said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto Him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on Thy right hand, and the other on the left, in Thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto Him, We are able. And He saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give,

but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto Him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.

PSALM CXLV.

I

WILL extol Thee, my God, O King; and I will bless Thy Name for ever and ever.

2. Every day will I bless Thee; and I will praise Thy Name for ever and

ever.

3. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.

4. One generation shall praise Thy works to another, and shall declare Thy mighty acts.

5. I will speak of the glorious honor of Thy majesty, and of Thy wondrous works.

6. And men shall speak of the might of Thy terrible acts: and I will declare Thy greatness.

7. They shall abundantly utter the memory of Thy great goodness, and shall sing of Thy righteousness.

8. The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great

mercy.

9. The Lord is good to all: and His tender mercies are over all His works. 10. All Thy works shall praise Thee, O Lord; and Thy saints shall bless Thee.

11. They shall speak of the glory of Thy kingdom, and talk of Thy

power;

12. To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom.

13. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

14. The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

15. The eyes of all wait upon Thee: and Thou givest them their meat in due season.

16. Thou openest Thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

17. The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works.

18. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth.

19. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him: He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

20. The Lord preserveth all them that love Him: but all the wicked will He destroy.

21. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless His holy Name for ever and ever.

THE COLLECT.

ALM

LMIGHTY God, Giver of all good things, mercifully behold this Thy servant, now called to the office of a Bishop, and so replenish him with the truth of Thy doctrine, and adorn him with innocency of life, that, both by word and good example, he may faithfully serve Thee to the glory of Thy Name and the edification of Thy people; through the merits of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.

Then, after a Hymn and a Sermon, and immediately at the close of the Prayer for the Church Militant, let the elected Bishop be presented by two other Ministers unto the Bishop or Presbyter presiding, who should say :

BROTHER, Forasmuch as the Holy Scripture commands that we should not

be hasty in admitting any person to office in the Church which Christ hath purchased with no less price than the shedding of His own blood, we will examine you in certain Articles, to the end that the congregation present may have a trial, and bear witness, how you are minded to behave yourself in the Church of God.

Question. Are you persuaded that the Holy Scriptures contain all doctrine required as necessary for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? And are you determined, out of the same Holy Scriptures, to teach or maintain nothing as necessary to eternal salvation but that which you shall be persuaded may be concluded and proved by the same?

Answer. I am so persuaded, and determined, by God's grace.

Question. Will you then faithfully exercise yourself in the Holy Scriptures, and call upon God by prayer for the true understanding of the same; so that you may be able by them to teach and exhort with wholesome Doctrine, and to withstand and convince the gainsayers?

Answer. I will so do, by the help of the Lord.

Question. Will you endeavor, with all faithful diligence, to banish and drive away from the Church all erroneous and strange doctrines contrary to God's word: and both privately and openly call upon and encourage others to the same?

Answer. I will, the Lord being my helper.

Question. Will you deny all ungodliness and worldly lusts, and live soberly,

righteously, and godly in this present world; that you may show yourself in all things an example of good works unto others, that the adversary may be ashamed, having nothing to say against you?

Answer. I will so do, the Lord being my helper.

Question. Will you maintain and set forward, as much as shall lie in you, quietness, love, and peace among all men, and faithfully perform such functions and exercise such discipline as by proper authority shall be committed to you?

Answer. I will so do, by the help of God.

Question. Will you bear yourself with meekness and gentleness in this high office, never striving after power, or presuming to be a lord over God's heritage?

Answer. I will endeavor so to do, by the help of God.

ALMI

Then let the one presiding say:

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who hath given you a good will to do all these things; grant also unto you strength and power to perform the same; that He accomplishing in you the good work which He hath begun, you may be found unblamable at the latter day, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, hear our prayer

Answer. And let our cry come unto Thee.

LET US PRAY.

ALMIGHTY God, and most merciful Father, who of Thine infinite goodness

hast given Thine only and dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ to be our Redeemer, and the Author of everlasting life; who, after that He had made perfect our redemption by His death, and was ascended into heaven, poured down His gifts abundantly upon men, making some Apostles, some Prophets, some Evangelists, some Pastors and Teachers, to the edifying and making perfect His Church; Grant, we beseech Thee, to this Thy servant, such grace that he may evermore be ready to spread abroad Thy Gospel, the glad tidings of reconciliation with Thee; and perform the duties entrusted to Him, not to destruction, but to salvation; not to hurt, but to help: so that, as a wise and faithful servant, He may at last be received into everlasting joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with Thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

Then let the Ministers present in the Chancel lay their hands upon the head of the elected Bishop, kneeling before them, and the one presiding say:
