The Minister, if he shall have reason to doubt of the lawfulness of the proposed marriage, may demand sufficient surety for his indemnification, but if no impediment shall be alleged, or suspected, the Minister should say to the man,

M. WILT thou have this woman to thy wedded wife, to live together

after God's ordinance, in the holy estate of matrimony? Wilt thou love her, comfort her, honor, and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, keep thee only unto her, so long as ye both shall live?

[blocks in formation]

Then should the Minister say unto the woman,

N WILT thou have this man to thy wedded husband, to live together

after God's ordinance, in the holy estate of matrimony? Wilt thou obey him, and serve him, love, honor, and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, keep thee only unto him, so long as ye both shall live?

[blocks in formation]

Then should they give their troth to each other in this manner:

The Minister, receiving the woman at her father's or friend's hands, should cause the man, with his right hand, to take the woman by her right hand, and to say after him as followeth :

I

M. take thee N. to my wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth.

Then should they loose their hands, and the woman, with her right hand taking the man by his right hand, should likewise say after the Minister,

I

N. take thee M. to my wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and to obey, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I give thee my troth.

Then should they again loose their hands, and the man give unto the woman a ring, and the Minister, taking the ring, deliver it unto the man to put it upon the fourth finger of the woman's left hand; and the man, holding the ring there, and taught by the Minister, should say,

WIT

TITH this ring I thee wed, and with all my worldly goods I thee endow, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Then the man, leaving the ring upon the fourth finger of the woman's left hand, the Minister should say,

LET US PRA).

OUTR

UR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

ETERNAL God, Creator and Preserver of all mankind, Giver of all spiritual Grace, the Author of everlasting life, send Thy blessing upon these Thy servants, this man and this woman, whom we bless in Thy name; that as Isaac and Rebecca lived faithfully together, so these persons may surely perform and keep the vow and covenant between them made (whereof this ring, given and received, is a token and pledge), and may ever remain in perfect love and peace together, and live according to Thy laws, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then let the Minister join their right hands together, and say, HOSE whom God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.

THOSE

Then let the Minister speak unto the company :

FORASMUCH as M. and N. have consented together in holy wedlock, and

have witnessed the same before God and this company, and thereto have given and pledged their troth, each to the other, and have declared the same by giving and receiving a ring, and by joining hands; I pronounce, that they are man and wife, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

G

And let the Minister add this Blessing:

OD the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, bless, preserve, and keep you: the Lord mercifully with His favor look upon you, and fill you with all spiritual benediction and grace, that ye may so live together in this life, that in the world to come ye may have life everlasting. Amen.

SUITABLE PASSAGES OF HOLY SCRIPTURE,

TO BE READ IN THE SICK-ROOM.

THE

HE beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between His shoulders. Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be. The Lord is my shepherd; therefore can I lack nothing.

He shall feed me in a green pasture, and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

He shall convert my soul, and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me.

The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom then shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom then shall I be afraid?

For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His tabernacle; yea, in the secret place of His dwelling shall He hide me, and set me upon a rock of stone. Thou hast been my succor; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

When my father and my mother forsake me, the Lord taketh me up. Whoso dwelleth under the defence of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope and my stronghold; my God, in Him will I trust.

For He shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall defend thee under His wings, and thou shalt be safe under His feathers; His faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of His servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the Name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.

They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.

The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him.

The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him.

For the Lord will not cast off forever:

But though He cause grief, yet will He have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies.

For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea, rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

(As it is written, for Thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.)

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

And thou shalt call His name Jesus; for He shall save His people from their sins.

In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.

By one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

This is my blood, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.

If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you, for His Name's sake.

He was manifested to take away our sins.

Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we being dead to sin should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

That loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood.

Wherefore, I say unto thee, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

And He said unto her, thy sins are forgiven.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

To the general assembly and church of the first-born, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who
