portion at Thy hands, whether it be much or little, not only with contentment, but with gratitude. Enlighten our understandings and sanctify our desires, so that we may never seek that which Thou hast forbidden; or injure our neighbor in respect to that which Thou hast bestowed upon him. May we be guarded from that inordinate selfishness which our fallen nature too often exhibits; and may we do unto all men whatsoever we would that they should do unto us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ON THE NINTH COMMANDMENT.

GOD, who art the God of all truth and holiness, strengthen us that we may flee from every snare of the devil, who is the father of lies and enlighten and direct us, that we may always speak truth to our neighbor; and that, while we avoid all malice and deceit towards him, we may likewise avoid all hypocrisy towards Thee. Guard us from that levity by which we may injure our neighbor for our own pleasure, and from that malice by which we may wrong him by deliberate falsehood. May our tongues be consecrated to Thy glory, and with our lips, as in our lives, may we show forth Thy praise; all which we ask in the name of our blessed Redeemer. Amen.

ON THE TENTH COMMANDMENT.

LMIGHTY God, who triest the reins and the heart, and who knowest all our secret transgressions; who wilt hereafter bring our desires as well as our works into judgment, strengthen us to drive away all envy and wantonness from the inner man, and conform our souls to Thee, the Father of purity, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE ADVENT.

LMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we render Thee most hearty thanks, that after man, created in Thine own image, had fallen under the curse of sin and death, Thou didst not leave him to perish in helpless misery, but didst provide a Saviour, and proclaim to the fathers, by the mouth of Thy prophets and holy men of old, the advent of Thy dear Son, the hope of Israel, the desire of all nations, the Redeemer of the world, that by believing on Him, we might have the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting; to whom with Thee

and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, be glory and thanksgiving, world without end. Amen.

THE INCARNATION.

THOU only-begotten Son of God, Light of Light, God of God, very God of very God, who, in the fulness of time wast made flesh and didst take upon Thyself all our sins and infirmities, that we might have salvation from sin and eternal life in Thee; we bless Thee for Thy holy incarnation; and with the multitude of angels who proclaimed Thy birth, and with Thy people among all nations, we unite in singing glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Amen.

FOR THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR.

vouchsafed to us, our escape from dangers seen and unseen, our opportunities for doing good, and our seasons of communion with Thee. Forgive, we beseech Thee, our numberless sins and shortcomings. May our offences, through the blood of Christ, all be buried with the closing year, to rise up against us no more for ever; and grant that whatever time may be further granted us upon the earth may be employed in Thy fear and to Thy service, so that when time for us shall be no longer, we may spend with Thee a blessed eternity, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WE

FOR THE BEGINNING OF A YEAR.

E acknowledge with thankfulness, O our God, Thy fatherly care over us, in bringing us safely to the beginning of another year. Give us grace, we pray Thee, to devote ourselves afresh to Thy service, and may we glorify Thee in newness of heart and life; that whenever our mortal course shall be completed, and our existence no longer measured by months and years, we may be for ever happy in Thy presence and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CHRIST'S LIFE AND EXAMPLE.

BLESSED Jesus, who wast tempted as we are tempted, yet

without sin, and who by Thy perfect obedience to the will of Thy heavenly Father, didst fulfil all righteousness and leave us an example; assist us, we beseech Thee, in our infirmity and enable us by Thy spirit so to follow Thy steps, that we may daily grow in grace and be transformed more and more into Thy glorious image, to the praise of Thy holy name. THE PASSION.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, who by Thy bitter passion and crucifixion hast redeemed us from the curse of sin, the power of death, and the woe of damnation; most heartily do we thank Thee for Thine unspeakable love, for every burden Thou didst bear, for every tear Thou didst weep, for every pain Thou didst suffer, for every conflict Thou didst endure, for every drop of blood Thou didst shed for us, Thine enemies; and we humbly beseech Thee to give us grace, that, being dead unto sin, we may live unto righteousness all our days, and attain at last to the glory of the blessed resurrection. Amen.

A

THE LOVE OF CHRIST.

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who didst so love the world as to give Thine only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life: mercifully grant unto us, we beseech Thee, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith, so that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend, with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge; to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be glory in the church throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

HOLY

UNION WITH CHRIS1.

OLY Saviour, who art the true vine from which we derive our spiritual life and nourishment, and without whom we can do nothing but wither and die; be pleased, we beseech Thee, so to unite us to Thyself, by the power of the Holy Ghost, and through the bond of a living faith, that, being partakers of Thy divine nature, we may bring forth much fruit, and for ever abide in Thee, as Thou dost abide in us, until we shall see Thee as Thou art, and glorify and enjoy Thee, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAISE AND ADORATION.

LORD JESUS CHRIST, in whom the whole fulness of the Godhead and manhood without sin, dwelleth in one person for ever; who, for us men and for our salvation, didst die and rise again, and now sittest at the right hand of the Father Almighty, as our Prophet, Priest, and King, able and willing to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by Thee; Thou art worthy to receive the grateful homage of all ages, and creeds, and tongues; and, with the
