The Son, which is the Word of the Father, begotten from everlafting of the Father (1), the very (m) and eternal God (n) of one Subftance with the Father (0), took Man's Nature in the Wamb of the bleed Virgin, of her Subftance (p): So that two whole and perfect Natures, that is to fay, the Godhead and the Manhood, were joined together in one Perfon, never to be divided, whereof is one Chrift, very God and very Man (q), who, for our Sakes, truly fuffered moft grievous Torments in his Soul from God (r), was crucified, dead, and buried (s) to reconcile his Father to us (t), and to be a Sacrifice not only for original Guilt, but also for all actual Sins of Men (u).

ARTICLE V.

Of the Holy Ghoft.

The Holy Ghoft is very and eternal God, of one Subftance (f), Majefty (g), and Glory with the Father and the Son (b), proceeding from the Father and the Son (i).

ARTICLE VI.

Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for
Salvation.

Holy Scripture (k) containeth all Things necessary to Salvation (1); fo that whatfoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be believed as an Article of Faith, or necessary to Salvation (m).

By the Name of Holy Scripture we understand all the Canonical Books of the Old and New Teftament, which follow: Of the Old Testament, Genefis, Exodus, &c. Of the New Teftament, The Gospel according to Matthew, &c. All which Books, as they are commonly received, we do receive, and acknowledge them to be given by the Infpiration of God, and in that Regard to be of most certain Credit and highest Authority.

ARTICLE VII.

Of the Old Teftament.

The Old Teftament is not contrary to the New, in the Doctrine contained in them (n); for both in the Old and New Teftament, everlasting Life is offered to Mankind by Chrift (o), who is the only Mediator between God and Man (p), being both God and Man (q); wherefore they are not to be heard, which feign that the old Fathers did look only for temporary Promifes (t).

Although the Law given from God by Mofes, as touching Ceremonies and Rites, doth not bind Chriftians (s), nor the Civil Precepts given by Moles, fuch as were peculiarly fitted to the Commonwealth of the Jews, are of Neceffity to be received in any Commonwealth (t); yet, notwithstanding, no Christian Man whatsoever is free from the Obedience of the Commandments which are called Moral (u). By the Moral Law we understand all the Ten Commandments taken in their full Extent.

ARTICLE IX.

Of Original, or Birth, Sin.

Original Sin (x) ftandeth not in the following of Adam, as the Pelagians do vainly talk (y); but, toge ther with his firft Sin imputed (z), it is the Fault and Corruption of the Nature of every Man that naturally is propagated from Adam; whereby Man is wholly deprived of original Righteousness (a), and is Dd 4
