spiration of the Holy Ghost. Forsaking all other hope and trust, I will, with the publican, exclaim, Lord, be merciful to me a sinner,' and like Peter on the swelling waves, I will cry out, Lord, save or I perish.' I will plead his grace and mercy, his agony and bloody sweat, his death and sufferings, his resurrection and ascension, and I will say, 'I pray thee,

O Lord, by all these to save and deliver a soul that deserves to die the second

death."" Such will be the feelings and the reply of a sin-convinced, humblehearted, mourning penitent when brought within view of the swellings of Jordan. And will such an one perish in that hour, or be left unsupported? no, for there are many great and precious promises given to such. Although a thousand unbelievers should fall at his right hand, and ten thousand hypocrites and hardened sinners on his left, the Lord Jesus on whom he calls and depends will not let the destruction of judgment come near him. Where sin has abounded, grace and forgiveness shall much more abound. The

blood of Jesus Christ shall cleanse him from all his sins. Death will wreck the body, but the soul shall live, and because it is redeemed it shall live and reign with Christ for ever.

APPLICATION.

We are all approaching this Jordan. We must all go down into its swellings. Heart and flesh must fail with every one of us. Soon the mists of death will gather over our eyes, the pulse will, ere long, flutter their last, the blood stagnate, the heart will stop, and the spirit will depart. This will be our case, even if we end our days in peace and quiet on shore. But as to some that hear or read this address, they may perhaps, ere long, be called to pass through the swellings of a breaking surf, or an overwhelming sea, and be swept from the spar or from the wreck to which they have clung for safety, and from thence they may be called to pass through the swellings of the Jordan of death. Ah, this may be so unwelcome a thought as to cause some to determine

not to think of it. But come death will in one shape or other, and after death comes the judgment. Have you then, my friends, been accustomed to lay these things to heart? Have you made Christ Jesus your refuge? Is he precious to your souls? Are you waiting his call, believing that he will save you? Can you say that you long for his salvation? Is it your prayer and desire to be found in him; pardoned in his blood and sanctified by his Spirit? If so, then the swellings of Jordan can do you no harm. When you go down into the stream of death his presence will be with you; his Spirit shall comfort and refresh you. Death shall then open unto you the gates of everlasting life, and you shall be with Christ for ever and ever.

"When bending o'er the brink of life,

My trembling soul shall stand,

Waiting to pass death's awful flood,

Great God, at thy command:

"When weeping friends surround my bed,

And close my sightless eyes;

When laden with the weight of

This broken body lies:

years,

"When every long-lov'd scene of life

Stands ready to depart;

When the last sigh that shakes the frame
Shall rend this bursting heart:

"O thou great source of joy supreme,
Whose arm alone can save,
Dispel the darkness that surrounds
The entrance to the grave!

"Lay thy supporting, gentle hand,
Beneath my sinking head;
And let a beam of love divine
Illume my dying bed.

"Leaning on thy dear faithful breast,
May I resign my breath;
And in the smiles of mercy

The bitterness of death."

SERMON XV.

THE TRUE AND ACCEPTABLE WORSHIPPERS OF

GOD.

PHILIPPIANS III. 3.

"For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."

In these words we have a true description of a people whose creed and conduct are what God would have them to be. It has ever been the great aim of Satan to lead men off from real, heartfelt gospel religion to depend on forms and ceremonies, and to take the shadow for the substance, and to think more of their own peculiar sect and party, than of that only true and perfect creed and practice laid down in the Word of God. Hence, in old times, the Jews made a great boast of being the children of Abraham, and
