peace in believing, with more and more of the enlightening and sanctifying influences of the Holy Ghost. And as these blessings are increased, you will become increasingly more spiritual, and like your Lord himself, who in the days of his flesh spent many a night watch alone in prayer and meditation, that you might find mercy in that day" when he shall come to be glorified in his saints and admired in all them that believe." Thus will you be fitted for all the coming events of his providence through the remainder of the voyage of life, whether they may be joyous or grievous to the flesh, whether they may be prosperous or adverse as to the things of this world. Oh, the blessing of having the Son of the living God as our guard, and guide, and portion! If the Lord be for us, we may smile at all who are against us. No matter how furiously the storm in the night watch may blow, or how deep and dangerous the swell may gather around the vessel, if our souls are justified by faith and we do but experience peace

with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, then come life, come death, come storm or calm, all will be well. Therefore comfort ye one another with frequent discourses on these things; and, on every suitable occasion, endeavour to get good to your souls by meditating on all the goodness of the Lord to you in times past, and on the many great and precious promises that are left for your comfort through the future; and while you are benefited, may the Lord have all the glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

THE CRUCIFIXION.

"Alas, and did

Saviour bleed,

And did my Sov'reign die ?

Would he devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I?

"Was it for crimes that I had done,
He groan'd upon the tree?
Amazing pity, grace unknown,
And love beyond degree.

"Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in!

When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature's sin.

"Thus might I hide my blushing face,
While his dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in tenderness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.

"But drops of grief can ne'er repay The debt of love I owe:

Here, Lord, I give myself away, 'Tis all that I can do."

THIS solemn admonition may be said daily to go forth from heaven in warning and mercy to all the sons and daughters of Adam. And happy, thrice happy, are they, and they only, who hear, and fear, and turn unto the Lord, who seek and obtain that state of soul which fits and prepares them to live or to die. And does the world encourage the ministers of Christ to remind them of this text? No, the world in general lieth in wickedness, and every child of the world, every lover of sin and vanity, every infidel and unbeliever, endeavours to stop his ears,

and to harden his heart against the remembrance of God, and of the soul having one day to meet him in judgment. But as surely as there is a God, so surely must every soul stand before him, and receive according to the things done in the body, whether they have been good, or whether they have been evil. Let us then proceed to the consideration of this subject by,

First, endeavouring to see what it is to be prepared to meet God.

Oh, how solemn is the question, and how serious a matter is that of answering it! May the Holy Spirit direct me to speak agreeable to the mind of God; and give you the hearing ear, and the understanding, and believing heart to receive, and act upon it. To be in a state of preparation to meet God, we must be in a state of pardon of sin, and of a renewal of heart. No unpardoned sinner can find entrance into the kingdom of heaven; no unrenewed heart can see God. Perhaps these are truths that you all agree to. In a general way, every
