brood mare Puss, dam of Vulcan, Beatrice, The Bride, Pay-the-way, Venus, Vesta, and The Darter, (all winners.) Puss was got by Teniers out of Cora, by Peruvian, Alexander, Sweet William, &c. &c. Ishmael is by the famous Sultan, sire of Bay Middleton, who was sire of the Flying Dutchman, winner of the Derby, Leger, and Doncaster Cup and Stakes, to the amount of £20,000, out of the celebrated Cobweb. The Star is perfectly sound, free from blemish, nine years old off, stands 15-3 hands high, of a rich golden chesnut, and for symmetry of shape, combined with power and substance, he challenges competition. He possesses the best temper and constitution, and from his powerful short legs and fine fencing, likely to get superior hunters. He has won several races, at long and short distances, carrying the highest weights the last year he ran, beating amongst various others, Fireaway, King Dan, Colleen Dhas, and Warp. Puss, with her foal by Birdcatcher, was purchased by the Marquess of Waterford for 400 guineas. The Star of Erin's produce challenge competition for their size and racing appearance. He covered but one thorough-bred mare in 1847-an untried one-which produced Kick-up-the-dust, winner of the Sweepstakes at the Curragh June Meeting, 1850. At the Curragh April Meeting she won 65 sovs and Her Majesty's Plate of 100 gs for mares. At the Chester Spring Meeting she won the Grosvenor Stakes, Her Majesty's Plate, and ran second for the Grand Stand Cup, beaten only by a head; also £80 at Eglinton Park. the Curragh September Meeting she won the Wellingtons and Her Majesty's Plate of 100 gs for mares, beating The Countess and Caprice; and at the Curragh October Meeting she won the Royal Whip, carrying 9st 111b, four miles, beating Dauphin, Cyprus, and Mallet. Sweetmeat started twenty-four times as a two and three year old, and was only beaten once he was both speedy and stout. He is the sire of the colt Peppermint, a winner of two races, and of the filly My Fancy, a winner of three races. These are the only two year olds by Sweetmeat that have appeared in public. Tearaway was got by Voltaire, sire of Charles 12th, winner of the Doncaster St. Leger, 1839, and of Voltigeur, winner of the Epsom Derby, 1850, and of the Great Doncaster St. Leger, 1850, after a dead heat with Russborough, son of Tearaway, out of the celebrated brood mare, Taglioni, by Whisker, (the dam of those celebrated race-horses, Retriever, Fireaway, Pride of Kildare, &c. &c.) The owner of Tearaway has subscribed to the Great National Produce Stakes, 1855, which entitles mares covered by him this season the privilege of their produce running for same. Every attention paid by the Proprietor to mares, &c. and good grass for barren mares, at 7s. per week, over a tract of 70 acres of prime grass. Hay and grass for foaling mares at 9s, per week.
