Notes on Reliable Remedies

lodum-Miller for Influenza-(From a well known Kansas physician)., Kansas, October 14, 1918. lodum-Miller Company, Kansas City, Missouri, Gentlemen: Please send me at once two pounds IodumMiller. I have used Iodum-Miller in more than 150 cases of the Spanish flu in the last few weeks and not one case of pneumonia has developed as yet. When a patient gets his hide soaked with IodumMiller, there is no chance for the old pneumo. Yours truly, M. D.

A Word About Diphtheria Antitoxin-In the book "The Crowd, a Study of the Popular Mind" (LeBon), there is related the story of a shipwrecked crew on a raft, watching eagerly for some sign of a rescuing vessel. After some days of the great physical discomfort and mental anxiety imposed by their condition, one of the men saw on the horizon what he declared was a sail. His companions saw it, too, and because they wanted very much that it should be a sail, and because of the poignant hope in their breasts that it might be one, they came to think as did the first observer, that it really was one. And then when they came to it, they found it only a tree which had been uprooted in the storm. There have been frequent occasions in the history of medicine and pharmacy when much heralded new remedies or so-called spe

cifics proved to be "trees" rather than the hoped for "sails." But interesting as is this phase of the psychology of the delusions of the popular mind, more interesting are the psychial processes of those who, in spite of absolute proof of the existence of a thing or the value of some scientific principle or theory, refuse to accept a "sail" as a "sail" or accept it so grudgingly and use it, or permit its use so sparingly or half heartedly that the good results possible from its application are never fully realized. For instance, the value of diphtheria antitoxin at this time is no longer questioned by scientific men and by most of the laity. The mortality rate from diphtheria has been cut in two by its use in the last quarter of a century, and yet, statistics obtained from the registration area for the past few years show that the yearly mortality in this country from diphtheria is more than 23,000. There can be no doubt that such a high mortality rate is due in large part to antitoxin not being administered at all because of opposition to its use or objection to the cost, to its too conservative use as concerns dosage and method of administration and the fear of serum sickness, etc., or to its being injected too late to successfully check the disease process. There are still some prejudices to be overcome and some old ideas and conceptions to be discarded if diphtheria antitoxin is to come into its rightful place as a life saver. The specification by physicians and druggists for high grade, concentrated, purified antitoxin (Eli Lilly & Company, Indianapolis, Ind.), packaged to meet dosage requirements and all methods of administration and at such prices as make its administration possible in even the poorest cases will in a great measure assist in this readjustment.

Yeast Therapy-There has been of late a considerable re-awakening of interest in the therapeutic value of yeast. That yeast favorably influences certain conditions when given internally or applied locally, has been established beyond question. Cerevisine is rapidly winning favor on account of its palatability and the marked effects which follow its use. Cerevisine is a specially prepared form of dessicated yeast supplied in tablets for internal administration, and in granule form for local use. Literature and samples of Cerevisine will be sent to any physician on request to E. Fougera & Co., Inc., 90-92 Beekman St., New York.

The Importance of Nasal Prophylaxis-In view of the prevalent of what has been termer Spanish influenza, especially in the eastern section of this country, a great deal of attention is being devoted to the prevention of nasal infection generally. Among the various prophylactic measures suggested, such as prompt isolation of cases, avoidance of crowds, proper ventilation and other hygienic regulations, none are deserving of such painstaking attention as routine cleansing of the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat, in order to

prevent the lodgment and growth of the infecting of ganism, whether it be the influenza bacillus or strepte coccus, or both. For this purpose peroxide of hydrogen is particularly adapted because of its well estab lished antiseptic and cleansing action upon the mucous membrane, and withal its great safety. It is very important, however, to select a peroxide which is unirritating, because any irritation of the nasal tissues that may result from its use will tend to invite rather than prevent bacterial invasion. A pe roxide of hydrogen that is particularly noted for its bland and soothing character, as well as its ant septic potency, is Dioxogen. Indeed the remarkable freedom of Dioxogen from the slightest irritating effect, together with is notable bactericidal actio render it eminently suitable for the disinfection of the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat and make it an exceptionally serviceable agent for maintaining nasal prophylaxis. Dioxogen is tasteles and odorless, and can be employed as freely as neede with certainty that only benefit will result from t use. Unquestionably there is no other germicide antiseptic that has proven so useful in every way that has justified such complete confidence in i quality and efficiency.

A New Calcidin Preparation-Is there a doctor in the country who has not used Calcidin? This efficient iodine preparation is now probably more widely used for the treatment of coughs, colds and croup, and other infections of the respiratory tract, than any other remedy. To meet an insistent demand for an elegant and palatable preparation of Calcidin, the Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, Illinois, have put out a "Calcidin Troche," which is a delicious, licorice flavored tablet, containing grain of Calcidin, and intended to be dissolved in the mouth so that the iodine will be absorbed slowly and come in contact, as much as possible, with the mucous membrane. Not only is it efficient, but it is so pleasant to take that children and older people really love it. We advise every doctor to prescribe or dispense Calcidin Tablets and Calcidin Troches.

Pond's Extract

One Hundred Percent American-It is a pleasure to announce to our readers that the Bayer Company manufacturers of the well known Bayer products was taken over some time ago by the Alien Propert Custodian and it is now a strictly American corpora tion with American officers and American board directors. The proceeds of the sale of the old Bayer Company will be held by the Alien Property Custodian until the end of the war when Congress will decide as to the disposition of, the money, but in the meantime full confidence can be accorded the Bayer Company with a knowledge that it is an American company from the president to the office boy.

CAUTION! Whenever the true merit of

a preparation is authoritatively established, imitation is sure to make its pernicious appearance. To counteract the injurious results of another of these fraudulent proceedings-in this instance affecting firm name and reputation-Sander & Sons have been compelled to appeal to law, and in the action tried before the Supreme Court of Victoria, the testimony of a sworn witness revealed the fact that this witness suffered intense irritation from the application to an ulcer of the defendant's product, which was palmed off as "just as good as Sander's Eucalyptol." Sander & Sons had the satisfaction to obtain a verdict with costs against this imitator, who is perpetually restrained from continuing his malpractice. Dr. Owen, in a report to the Medical Society of Victoria, and Dr. J. Benjamin, in the Lancet, London, both denounced, as others did before, on the strength of negative results, the application of unspecified eucalyptus products.

This forms convincing proof that only an authoritatively sanctioned article can be relied on.

SANDER & SONS' EUCALYPTOL
(Ecalypti Extract)

Has stood the test of Government investigation.

2. It was proved at the Supreme Court of Victoria by experts to be an absolutely pure and scientifically standardized preparation.

3. It is honored by royal patronage. 4. It always produces definite therapeutic results.

Therefore, to safegaurd the physicians' interest and to protect their patients, we earnestly request you to specify "Sander's Eucalyptol" when prescribing eucalyptus.
