Nous n'avons pu découvrir à quelle source le peintre a puisé le sujet qui, d'après son titre, représente une entrevue accordée à un certain Alfred, roi de Nercie ou Murcie, par un de ses vassaux, Guillaume d'Albanac, lequel expose dans un état de nudité complète, aux regards étonnés de son souverain, ses trois filles, célèbres par leur beauté, afin que parmi elles il puisse choisir une épouse. Cette scène extraordinaire perd bien de l'intérêt, si on réfléchit qu'il n'a jamais existé de roi de Mercie du nom d'Alfred, que le nom de Guillaume est plutôt normand que saxon, et que les surnoms étaient très-peu usitės, si même ils l'étaient en Angleterre, avant la conquête des Normands: d'ailleurs l'anecdote est tout-à-fait invraisemblable. We have not been successful in our endeavours to trace the source whence the painter derived the subject of the annexed picture, which is said to represent an interview granted to a king of Mercia, Alfred the third, by one of his vassals named William d'Albanac, wherein the latter exhibited before the admiring prince his three daughters, all celebrated beauties, divested of all apparel, in order that the monarch might select one of them for his wife. That there was no king of Mercia named Alfred the third, that William d'Albanac is rather a Norman than Saxon appelation, that sirnames were little, if at all, used in England before the Norman Conquest, and that the story is in itself barbarous, and improbable, are considerations which certainly diminish somewhat of the interest of this production, but do not prevent the painter's skill in the higher department of his art being felt and acknowledged.
